RAC won't pay for damage they caused - Help

Options
Hi,
Back in July we suffered a breakdown about 1hr from home.
With the RAC full package so thought I would be sorted but ....

I ended up waiting (along with my 2 kids & wife) by the roadside for 5hrs+ for recovery and then ....
after getting home I discovered later on in the day some damage to the rear of my car (scratches) caused by the magnetic light strip that the recovery truck used.
Now 4 months later I have been told by RAC they refuse to accept liability for damage.
Where do I stand and how can I resolve this?
Communications is terrible with this company and I can't get past their customer services "manager" who I think is just a frontline call centre person.

Any pointers on how I can respond would be gratefully accepted.

Cheers,

Mack2

    Hi Kenny,

So your saying I should be claiming through my own insurance?
That way I would have an excess to pay and with them not accepting I would be out of pocket surely?

I guess I never thought about insurance support as when I spoke to RAC they did not seem to have any problems with the damage not being their fault. It just took 4 months for them to disregard their initial findings and left me very annoyed with their attitude.
I will look into insurance side and see how that goes. So much hassle and terrible service from such a big company :-(

    Cheers

    RAC are useless.

I was with them for 15 years and never had a call out. Two years ago I had to call them for the first time ever because my handbrake had seized (ice) and I needed to get the kids to school. The guy came out, drove it up and down the street with the handbrake stuck on, parked it up and said "Sorry love, you'll just have to wait for it to thaw out!"

An hour later, my neighbour came knocking on my door to tell me my car was rolling down the street!! Silly !!!!!! had taken the handbrake off when he drove it and not reapplied it or put it into gear when he parked it up. Luckily for me, our street is on a slight camber and so only rolled about 50ft before it was stopped by a high kerbstone.

I phoned RAC to complain about it but they said it was my car and therefore my responsibility to make sure it is secure!

Needless to say I cancelled and have taken out a policy with the AA.

I personally wouldn't go through the insurance company, as your premiums would likely rise the following year. The incident would be registered as a non-fault claim, and something that you would have to declare to future insurers for 3-5 years.

  • How about getting some T-Cut and elbow grease!

and ruin the surrounding paintwork too?

i know a thing or two about car products and i know id never let t-cut touch my car

Autoglym's paint renovator is far superior (white bottle light pink logo)

its only good for light scratching and hazing, otherwise you need some elbow grease, a colour code, wet and dry, primer, paint and lacquer.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
