Using up sultanas and flaked almonds in Baking

I am new to this site and loving the tips for saving money:j
I am planning to make my own bread and have done a meal plan for the next 2 weeks, only needing to buy 4 items of food, yes my cupboards and freezer are bursting!!!

I have various ingrediants that need using up by the end of the month and wondered if anybody has any ideas for sultanas, raisons and flaked almonds?

Thank you to all the wonderful people who have posted their money saving ideas on here.:T

I prefer sultanas to currants or raisins and always substitute these in a recipe.

Bread and butter pudding is the obvious one. I always throw loads of sultanas in the banana muffins. A sweet tea bread with sultanas would be nice.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.

I usually make banana & sultana loaf which uses up sultanas and ripe banana - its a rosemary connelly receipe. Also I have a receipe from my mum for mixed spice buns (very similar to rock cakes) which has sultanas in it.

Finally I sometimes make up wee fairy cakes and sometimes add sultanas to them and they are lovely for a pudding with hot custard.

Remember you can do sultana oven scones which you are freeze as they are usually done in large batches.

Sorry do not know anything for the almonds. Happy baking.

make a basic flapjack recipe and add them to that. yummy.
when my mil make's an apple crumble in the crumble topping she mixes a handful of flaked almonds. it is really nice, something bit different.
  • How about a nice tea bread, iced and sprinkled with the flaked almonds
Or a steamed sultana puding served with custard
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

It isn't a baking suggestion, but I like flaked almonds and raisins and/or sultanas on my cereal in the morning :)

A festive suggestion, how about stollen? Substitute extra sultanas for some of the other fruit. It freezes well too.

Bakewell tart for the almonds. Have you got a food processor? You could probably ground some of them up for the filling part yourself and save some flaked for the topping.

One of my children won't eat sultanas etc, so, if I have some that need using up, I blend them. Then I add them to an ordinary chocolate cake or flapjack. Hidden fruit ;)
    import this
  • Wow! Thanks for the ideas, im making an apple and plum crumble today so going to top with the almonds and plan to make the banana and sultana receipe from rosemary conley which i found online.

    Thanks!!!
  • I like a few flaked almonds sprinkled into a curry together with coconut milk. I tend to use the blocks for the latter.
