He took the green ticket thing, yet never sent it off. I had in the meantime SORN (ed) the car, but in my name. I guess that means that the car is still mine, because I can't prove I sold it?

what SHOULD have happened is....once you 'sold' the car, YOU should have sent off the green thing [the V5c]to DVLA, with the 'new' owner's name and address...the DVLA then would send him the amended V5c.

The small tear-off slip is for the new owner, should they need proof of V5c possession in the interim period.

so...starting all over again, get a receipt for the money off housemate, send V5c to DVLA, notifying of change of ownership.....well done for SORN anyway...saves a DVLA fine, at least.

the new owner does not send anything off.....but it's important for the old owner to do so, should the vehicle be subsequently involved in nefarious activities, under 'new' ownership?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......
  • Thanks alastairq, wouldn't doing that make it look like I was trying to conceal the car, even though im not tho? Im such a fool

Yes it would, you would have to show the OR what you have done with the money, I doubt they would believe you 'sold' it 3 years ago and have only just send off the V5.

You may well end up with a BRU for disposing of an asset. As explained above, it makes no difference that it doesn't work, it has monetary value that the OR will want.

  • Hi,

Just some ideas I've had although they're probably not very good ones.

I take it you're already BR?

Did you disclose it on your forms as an assett?

Where did you get the fees from?

IF you didn't disclose it cos you had already "sold it" 3 yrs ago, couldn't you say that your sold it for your fees? Keep copy of "receipt" for proof of sale amount.

  • Thanks for your comments. TBH, the OR may be doing both my housemate and I a favour if it does go, ive been told it will cost about £500 to fix, then there would be tax and insurance and all the other costs involved with driving again. Darn thing does look a mess outside the house, neighbours get quietly vexed about it.
    Thanks again
