gas and electric for rented house?

Hello

I have a empty house that I'm trying to rent and told the engery suppliers this but they still keep charging me money the last bill for 3 months was £200! I supplied all the information they needed- meter readings. But because the house is empty I did not collect the post often so there were loads of red letters etc. I wrote 3 complaint letters and spoke with them on the phone but you get passed through so many people it was very unsuccessful. They carried on and sent a debt collectors letter and I just paid it as could not afford legal advice. But then they rebused me after.

Anyway to cut a story short I asked all the gas and electric to be disconnected, which they haven't done but sent me further bills!! Im so annoyed, not sure what to do? Anyone got any ideas?

If I do get tentants in I would tell them to use another engery company.

There is no way you should have a bill for £200 for 3 months when you haven't used any energy.

You may be charged a daily standing charge if you are not on a no standing charge tariff, but that wont be £200. Are the meter readings estimates?

Give us details of how that £200 was made up please.

Asking to have the gas & electricity disconnected was not a smart move - it'll cost you a fortune to reconnect. You'll never let it with no services connected. Looks like you were lucky they haven't done it yet.

You don't really need legal advice. You check the bill against the meter and if it is reasonably close, you pay and if it isn't you give the correct reading, preferably in a letter in your circumstances, and keep a copy. Then if they set the debt collectors on you, you tell them that you have given a reading and they should use that. Then if they don't you let them take you to court and make themselves look foolish, but you come here to check out whether you are doing it right.

Write to them, recorded delivery and tell them to send correspondence to your own address until you get a tenant. When you get a tenant take readings, your closing, their opening, pass these on to the utility together with name and address of tenant. When tenant goes, you do similar, take readings and tell the utility co to bill the tenants to the reading and yourself at your address thereafter.
