Seems to me that governments are doing all they can to price cars off the road. Ironic considering how much cash they injected into the motor industry to keep it afloat recently...Fight Crime : Shoot Back.

So what you're wondering is if the GPS data will be used to identify speeding vehicles?
The UK govt has already said it wouldn't be used in this way. But you might be wondering if other European Govts will issue such speeding tickets whilst you are on their soil.
For a start this assumes that a UK registered "GPS per mile tax" equipped car would be able to be 'detected' by other european countries sytems. Assuming it could be, then yes it is a possibility that you could find yourself being fined when you didn't pass a speed camera or a cop.
The simple solution for all of this would be to legislate that these GPS equipped cars are also speed limited according to the speed limit that they are driving in. Then no-one need ever worry about a speeding ticket ever again.0 -
Or are you simply wondering if the UK has 'signed up' to per mile taxes? I doubt it. Because countries in the EEA are able to determine their own taxes. So the UK will be under no external pressure to introduce per mile taxes.
IMO our govt will do it because they want to, not because of any pressure. And I think they will try to do it ignoring the UK publics obvious objections. It will be up to the UK public to protest in force against the changes. But I also think that the UK sheep will do very little to say 'no'.0 -
I'm not assuming any more pressure than the need to start balancing the books. Now they have signed up to the "treaty",or whatever you would like to call it, they will have the technology to introduce it. It just needs the willpower and they could introduce it anytime they want, assuming they win the election next year. Further with the gps they would have the means of identifying where any car is at any time. Just a bit further down the line than cctv.
Where's the "paranoid" smilie when you want it?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
