is a widescreen monitor necessary

I have been researching TFT monitors for a while now and am considering buying an Acer 1916. What is the advantage of buying a widescreen monitor when I don't play games etc. Silly question I know but I have an ordinary 17" Sony crt monitor at the moment and should like to know how a widescreen monitor would be of benefit to me.
Thanks.

I think the only reason to have a widescreen monitor is to have a better quality of DVD playback, but then again I think watching a film on a PC is ultra sad, I think widescreen is a gimmick, plus also I like CRT I find the picture more vibrant in colour and sharper, just stay away from Acer as they have poor build quality.0

Its isnt necessary but we have a 19" widescreen Viewsonic and it looks great when playing movies etc. It doesn't show 16.9 aspect ratio that is the standard ratio that films are shown on dvd, and you may get a slight border top and bottom as the monitor is 16.10 aspect ratio but it looks great.
Personnally as I use the monitor a lot it was worth paying that little extra and we now have a big screen (1440x900) to show things on.
Also remember some games are now coming widescreen along with teh standrad 4.3 aspect ratio. We dont play many games and really our pc is in need of upgrade but we plan to upgrade latre this year.
This is our monitor btw HERE

are there any other pitfalls regarding laptops that are worth avoiding?
I mean I know you get what you pay for, and there IS a reason why one latop costs £400 and another £1200."See you on the Other Side"0 -

Well now its about build quality, and specification and also a major point is aftercare, I personally wouldnt Touch Acer as I have been called out to repair or even trash that certain make, Mind you I have also had a couple of Sonys go wrong and it was in 3 cases the CD Drawer didnt want to play.
So unfortunately it can be hit and miss but as long as you have the 1yr warranty and could even get a 3yr warranty at a good deal you would be better off, its just a bit of hit and miss sometimes.
I personally like Toshiba for Aftercare, Packard Bell for Build and Sony for Styling its just a shame they cant all join forces and come up with a laptop that works.
Mind you I always say that Desktop is far far better as they are just so much easier to repair/upgrade and easy to clean dust out (maintain).0 -
you didnt mention Dell?"See you on the Other Side"0

To the OP I really dont think they are absolutely ness but just get a monitor that has some good reviews, maybe buy a PC magazine and have a look.0
