And yes, I shall paint and varnish it.....although the last one I made took ruddy weeks for the varnish to set.
Pooky - I made and sold salt-dough for years privately and at craft fairs. Are you putting one, fairly thick coat of varnish on? I always put 3 coats of varnish on as thinly as I could. Make sure your dough is COMPLETELY dried out. That looks quite a thick piece which will benefit from (probably) around 24 hours in the oven at the lowest temp possible.
