muffled playback on itunes

Dear all,
Hope someone can share their advice on this, I have searched the web all weekend (and have tried many ideas, with little success).
My sister has an ipod, but copied all tracks to her PC for backing up, and larger storage. When you play them back in itunes it seems OK then flicks into this muffled 'underwater' stuttery effect!
It isn't audio drivers, tried with different speakers and cables, the PC is fully up to date, just over a year old. (XP3000, abit KV7, 512 ram, maxtor 9 80GB hdd, win xp sp2...)
I don't know about codecs, but wondered if they might be an issue? The mp4s play better in media player, but occasionally show a 'skipping' like a scratched cd instead, but certainly more listenable. I assumed this was an issue to do with flow of data, but the maxtor drive is good (powermax has no issues) which led to my thoughts on codecs?
Any suggestions? Many thanks, in advance.

Are you multitasking, Litening to itunes and surfing as that will drain resources just try itunes alone, also if using dial up that will cause a lot of distortion.0
