When was it constructed?

I am trying (online) to buy house insurance. The problem is I live in a newly converted (I mean, just finished) barn conversion. Policy quotes ask you when your house was constructed. What should I say? If I ask for a quote based on the age of the walls (nothing else is original, but they are 2 ft thick) then the quotes add at least £100 to a quote based on a newly fitted house. Any ideas?

Hi - the online quoting systems only really cater for standard recently built houses. In view of the agricultural link I would suggest you try the local office of NFU Mutual for a quote. They have an excellent reputation and insuremany thatched ottages and old farmhouses.Alternatively as I assume you still live in Cornwall try the locally based Cornish Mutual who are well established. You have a unique property so the right insurance solution needs a bit of investigation !.

Alternatively if you have high value contents try Chubb Insurance or Hiscox Insurance who both specialize in period buildings with larger values.

If you want the help of a broker you could try Rowetts of St Austell or another local firm.Avoid the high street chains such as Swintons who are fine for standard car or house insurance.
