Fiesta Water Pump Repairs

I currently have an 05 Fiesta Zetec and have taken it into the garage for repair. I recieved a call to say there was a major leak in the water pump.

I have been quoted £260 for the repair including labour but this seems a tad excessive. I have asked them to hold off until I call in the morning but I would like some advice as to whether I am being striped up!!!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Probably about right as they have to remove and replace cambelt which would be about £140 + fit new water pump and replace coolant + labour.

You could probably get it cheaper if you have a mechanic in the family or as a friend. Looks like you will just have to pay it!
It could have been worse or a lot more expensive - that is how i would look at it.

Are you sure the cam belt needs to be done ?
I've just been reading a write up on the fiesta,
    http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/used/ford/fiesta-hatchback/full-review/23676-5
    it says on there, ....
'The water pump is a weak spot, expect a bill of £85
I've seen 2 brand new pumps for the fiesta on Ebay for £24 and £29.
I would check it out before letting the garage do any work.

When you get to that website click 'What should i look for'
to see where it says about the water pump.

    The cambelt drives waterpump.

It's bad practice to replace one & not the other.

Sorry but i have a fiesta - The cam belt turns the water pump that is why when a cam belt change is due a quick inspection of the water pump is done.
A new water pump is about £85 parts and labour.:D

yes i admit water pumps for fords are cheap (says an ex motor factor employee) but are cam belt driven cam belts overtime wear (condition and teath) and strech once removed it's bad practace to refit it as its a 50/50 chance that it will snap causing major mechanical problems to the valves and pistons and could potentially smash the head of the engine to peices and damage the crank also. not to mention you dont want to be running down the motor way when it happens and have a accident either.
ask the garage weather theyve quoted for just the pump and cambelt or weather their going to fit a pump and timing belt kit (ask them to use a gates kit ive never heard of a gates timeing belt snap in the years i worked at the motor factors) the kit comprises of pullies seals and belt and ask weather theyre going to change the alternator belt too.
for that price inc labour DONT KNOW ABOUT VAT though could be added on but its a fair price for the work involved. ive done them for friends usually takes about 3-4 hours start to fininsh and i'd charge about £200 as garages around my place charge £290+vat

Just goes to prove that we shouldn't believe everything we read on the Internet.
