Basic drill

I am looking to buy a drill, a basic one just to drill in masonry to hang pictures in my new home. Pl can anybody recommend a good one. Thanks

i spent ages this summer with Screwfix catalogue figuring this one out, for the same sort of need (good drill I can count on for occasional use) and ended up buying DeWalt 14.4V DC728 for about £100, a lot I know but rather happy with it, it is not too heavy, 2 batteries, cordless...it might be quite a bit cheaper now, this was back in july

A reasonably powered (550W) corded Bosch hammer drill will set you back about £33.74 from Homebase (mmm didn't realise was now that cheap may ask santa for one - he failed to supply me one last year!). A DeWalt cordless from screwfix is all very well if your using it everyday (and yes i've been tempted by the same screwfix offer myself). Any decent cordless drill is heavier than an equivalent corded one. If your not using a cordless drill often you'll have to charge it up before you can use. Sure you've got the inconvenience of a cable with corded...but is it worth £66.26 for the convenience (assuming you already have an RCD circuit breaker and extension cable)?
I've not found anywhere yet around the house that i can't get to without a corded drill..including the end of garden and loft. Indeed i think cordless drills are a bit bulky with the battery pack and can't get into places i can get to with my corded.


For decent masonry drill bits ..DeWalt Extreme2 (screwfix is good for something after all!). If its a first drill then i'd recommend getting a selection pack of the DeWalt Extreme2 masonry bits and a set of HSS drill bits (make not as critical ..my Black&Decker Piranha one's fine though) to start you off...with HSS bits you can drill wood as well as metal and plastic (though they don't tell you that!). My 6mm and 8mm masonry drill bits seem to get the most use so ensure you've got them in any selection you buy.

My current drill is a Wickes corded one that i bought for £20...it's too heavy IMHO and had a thrashing and various things wrong with it now (variable speed is all or nothing now and the front hand grip is a bit mishapen making it tricky to fit the depth gauge) but it is 2 years past the 1 year guarantee it had so can't really complain too much. Next one will be a bosch for me probably.

If you're just hanging pictures, any old £30 drill, corded/cordless with hammer action will do the job.
My old one was about £30 from Dyas and lasted for years, including grinding down most of a car chassis. My de Walt is a lot tougher, but the cheap drills are fine for most uses. Same with bits- any old (masonry) bits will work for you.

my 25 quid drill from wickes is over ten yrs old now. still works fine.

B & Q have ryobi 14v cordless drills with two batteries for £50 odd. worth it I'd say, thy're usually a LOT more. get on the website. It's a decent enough make, not quite de Walt but certainly up there, so my builder friends say.

I've just purchased this set about an hour ago from my local B&Q. Went in at lunchtime and they had loads in stock, but I've just had the last one, and there were a couple of people after me asking staff for more, so it's certainly proving to be a popular deal!

I used the 15% voucher too, so paid only £42.50 which is an absolute bargain IMO. They're a nice weight, feel well made and a decent brand, so you can't really go wrong if that's what you need.

But, if I could only have one drill in my DIY arsenal, then my trusty corded hammer drill would be it, especially for drilling into masonry.

Thanks for posting this! I've just reserved a set for collection tomorrow and printed the 15% voucher off. I also went through topcashback, who are giving £2 back on reservations, so it'll come to £40 :D
