How much compensation am i entitled to?

Options
I had a very bad experience with a major car insurance company (can i mention who it is) and made a complaint through the ombudsman. The Ins. company have made me a cash offer after admitting what happened to me was appalling and unforgivable. I think i had a mental breakdown because of the way i was treated. It was not just one problem but many and it went on for months. I thought i was losing my mind at the time and still get upset when i think about what happened.
The Ins. people have made me a very small cash offer which i have turned down as i do not believe it is the right amount of money, in fact it is an insult. They are going to come back to me with another offer.

My question is, how do i decide what is the right amount for what they put me through?

This is my first post on this site and please excuse me if i have put this in the wrong place.

Thankyou in advance

Unless you can give the full details about what happened I don't see how anyone can answer this.

    The first bit is fine.

The last bit is nasty. Not everyone who has a "breakdown" ends up being treated as an in patient.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Indeed. Most mental health problems are treated outside of being remitted to hospital and most carry on with their lives through the magic of drugs,.

Hate people who think all 'mental' people should be locked up

The Ombudsman's website provides some examples of when they've asked financial services firms to pay compensation for what they call "distress, inconvenience and other non-financial loss" and how much is paid.

Obvously none of the cases mentioned will be identical to yours, but it may give you something to consider when thinking about the insurer's offer.
