Hotel in Barcelona - advice please!!

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in Barcelona for 2 nights next July - 28th and 29th?

A reasonably central location would be good so that we can walk places. We only have one clear day there before moving on so don't want to be too isolated.

I don't want to pay the earth as we will be needing 2 rooms for the family!!!

What's public transport like in Barcelona?

When we leave Barcelona to go to further up the coast for 2 weeks I will be needing car hire. I've used CARJET.COM before now and was going to use them again unless anyone has found anything better.

Thanks

  • Check out my comparison site.
    http://www.hotelscomparison.com

It compares prices from 12 hotel booking companies.
You will be amazed at the difference in prices for the same room on the same nights.

You can search for all hotels in Barcelona or on 1800 other destinations worldwide.

Alternatively, if you know your hotel name then you can search just to get the best rates for that particular hotel only.

Let me know what you think.

I have been to Barcelona twice.

I recommend the Apsis Aranea Hotel (although Apsis have some others too). It is a good standard basic hotel and about 20 minutes walk from the heart of the shops etc, though nearer to the zoo and that area.

oh and if you are flying there via Ryan-Air the bus from Girona Airport terminates about 50 to 100m away! so no need for taxi's etc.

Is was fair priced (cheap in my view) and the best price I obtained was through their own website (chepaer than all the online booking agents like expedia, last minute etc!)

Watch 2 star or less ... many are HOSTELS rather than hotels!

Barcelona's transport is excellent - good buses and metro though if you are ok walking its great to walk about..... 1 days will not be enough - you will want to come back! 4 to 5 days is a must.

If you have children the Zoo and Aquarium are good entertainment for them.

  • we recommend the hostal Opera, Sant Pau 20, 08001 Barcelona, email info@hostalopera.com. we paid £42.00 per night for a double room ensuite in November 2004.
Clean, modern and very good, staff excellent, situated behind the Opera house right in la Rambla. Hope this helps
  • I recommend the Barcelona Tourist Bus. 2 circular sight-seeing routes that takes in Barcelona's main sites. 32 stops clearly signposted at points of interest. Get on and off as you please. Each route takes about 2 hours. 1 day ticket 16e, 2 consecutive days 20e. Well worth the money.

A word of warning to anyone travelling on the Barcelona Bus from Girona Airport into town. Make sure you are at the bus stop at least 2 buses before the one you need if you have suitcases. On my last trip people with hand luggage get on quickly. Those loading luggage and then joining the queue could not get on, then the scramble to retrieve the cases ...........oh dear, hell. Quite a few people missed their flights. I arrived in plenty of time for the 17.00 bus, but could not get on,nor the 17.30,18.00 but made it on the 18.30. I am told this happens quite frequently, hence regular travellers carrying hand luggage only.
  • Thanks for the info. I'll check out the sites.

We're spending 2 weeks on the coast further north and just thought that 2 nights in Barcelona at the start would be a good idea. I can imagine that one could easily spend a week in Barcelona alone.
  • public transport fantastic, esp metro/tube. as for a hotel, we stayed in a lovely one on the avenue diagonal in the summer of 2003... only problem is cannot remember the name! will go and research and come back to you :-[!.it wa a large hotel, part of a chain, but fantastic stanadrds of service and cleanliness and literally 10 mins walk from the ramblas, or the seafront :)
  • Stayed in the citypark pelayo a couple of years ago, it was brand new then. Booked through hotelclub.net and it was pretty good in terms of price. No need to spend cash on bus passes etc because it is a minutes walk from plaza catalunya and the ramblas. Can see the hotel through https://www.cityparkhoteles.com, wouldn't recommend booking through them, bound to be other deals around.

    Try http://www.hotelregenciacolon.com/Regencia/index.trx?referencia=Colon(AC).

I've stayed there twice. Couldn't be more central. Right in the centre of the gothic quarter and close to las ramplas, best restaurants, night life, sea etc.

In my opinion it's a mistake to stay any further out especially if you're only there a short time.
  • I took the advice and booked at hostalopera.com. It looks well situated and clean and excellent value at 58 euros for a double room.

Thanks for all the advice. ;D

Still need to sort out where we're going but a trip on the cable car and the football stadium will be compulsory.
