Reading glasses

I am just beginning to need glasses for reading. I had an eye test today and it showed that I did need glasses for reading smaller text. Most novels etc I can still read fine. Reading print online is no problem.
The optician showed me lots of glasses and was trying to encourage me to buy two pairs. I couldn't decide which I liked so went away to think about it. I noticed a large stand reading glasses in a shop which were so cheap compared to the perscription glasses. What are the disadvantages/dangers of cheap glasses? I did not buy any, I am just curious.

Are both eyes the same?
I picked up a pair of off-the-peg glasses for reading a few years ago, when my eyes started 'to go', but the deterioration was still slight. However because one eye was actually worse than the other and even though at the time like you I could still manage to read novels OK (I thought!) I have developed a frown line on one side , where I was presumably squinting a bit to compensate.0 -
off the peg glasses will probably work just do for you in your case if you are only just struggling slightly and if you have the same prescription in each eye, but the vision wouldnt be as good as with a prescribed set of glasses.
i am a glasses dispenser, post your prescription and i'll be able to tell you if you will be ok with ready readers or not?

Thanks Em lou
. There seem to be quite a few numbers on the prescription. What do I need to give you? 0 -
Hi Prudent
Did you know that it was National Eye Week, so a perfect time to get your eyes tested!
If you go to their site, there are a few ideas for saving money on eye tests and glasses, if you're worried about the cost.

Hope this helps

just plucking numbers out of thin air, it should be something like
SPH +.075
CYL -1.25
AXIS 83
and then again for the other eye

L SPH =00.25
nothing in for CYL & Axis
R SPH +00.50
Cyl + 00.251
Axis 80
I hope that makes sense.
I am guessing one eye is different to the other?0 -
Pah..hardly worth bothering with. Buy some ready readers off the twirly stand in the supermarket/costco/boots/whatever..L SPH =00.25
nothing in for CYL & Axis
R SPH +00.50
Cyl + 00.251
Axis 80
I hope that makes sense.
I am guessing one eye is different to the other?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I didn't think there was much of a problem. I am just beginning to squint at very tiny letters and numbers.0

Is that for the distance?
If you need readers there may be something like +1.00 (which is where most start) written elsewhere.Been away for a while.0 -
that wouldnt cause enough bother to you to need glasses, so i am guessing there is a reading add on the prescription card somewhere?
the reading add should be the same in both eyes, and judging by your distance prescription, theres no real need for anything more specific than ready readers there! they even do them in poundland if you wanted to be really MSE about it
good luck! Mummy to
