I don't think expense comes into it.If it were me,i would have a big sash fitted to make sure.
Me too. When I got my windows changed they all had 50/50 sashes.

I'd get an escape window put in every bedroom. I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.....& it's a small price to pay for piece of mind.

And what happens on hot summer nights? And how can the bedrooms be aired each morning? Those little top lights just don't let enough fresh air in.

Our double glazing was fitted about 6 years ago and I had a window that opens 90 degrees in every window in the house except the toilet to be able to escape easily from anywhere.
Small additional cost compared to the overall price, and they will always do a deal on extras to get the sale.

If I were you I'd contact the local firebrigade and see if they do free assesments. They do where I live. If so they will come round and asses the fire safety of the house, suggest a plan for what to do in eventy of fire (which may to call 999, then stay put with the doors shut and await rescue since if she is near a firestation she should not risk the drop from a first floor window) give preventative safety information and fit extra smoke alarms. If you ask them about the safety of the windows I'm sure they will be able to give you the best advice on whether improvements are advisable.
