Barclaycard 0% cheques-anyone paid into bank lately?

Has anyone got promotional cheques sent to them very recently and used them to pay into their own bank account?

I had a Skycard which has been taken over by Barclaycard and so I've been sent a new Barclaycard complete with 2 promotional cheques. Nowhere does it say, 'only to be used to transfer to another company', yet the csa on the phone insists you cannot pay these into your account. So why does it not say that on the bumph?

Sorely tempted to write one out to my partner and bank, but still have reservations.

  • Could this be a misunderstanding?

With MBNA cheques the rule is you can't use them to pay off "your" account meaning the MBNA credit card account on which it is drawn.

You can still write out a cheque and pay it into a different account you hold.

No, it's not a misunderstanding. I specifically asked 'can I write out one of these cheques to myself and pay it into my current account' Answer 'no'.

Can I make it out to anyone else then? Answer 'no, you can only use them for credit card companies that you have an account with and you want to BT from'.

It's bugging me, as that is not written anywhere.

Yes, if you ring Card Services, Barclaycard's staff will tell you the cheques are not intended for this purpose.

That said, I doubt whether the bank's system is sufficiently intelligent to tell whose account a cheque has been paid into. It's your choice really.

You can do this. I have 2 Barclaycards with 0 % offers and cheques, and paid them both into my current account. They both came out at 0% on my statement too.
