Hi, if you are around before this drops off the page. Regarding your help on this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=207000 on Friday, I'm not sorted yet but could you just clarify re. the http://192.168.1.1 suggestion - I entered admin as the password, but where it asks below that for "username" and password, am I correct in entering my email address as username (which is what Freeserve recognise for my Broadband account) and my usual email/broadband password?
If this is correct then I am obviously still doing something wrong, as I can still only get an Internet connection with my old modem plugged into my laptop, making it non-portable.
The router is recognising the network connection, but can't seem to bypass the plug-in modem to let me connect to Freeserve Broadband. When I unplug it and try to connect, the message is "couldn't communicate with device". On "show all connections", Freeserve Broadband is disabled, and will not enable on request, but Wireless is showing as connected. I'm wondering whether I need to change a default setting somewhere, but can't find where to check for that.
I don't seem to have a yellow cable (you suggested this might be for LAN), but have found a blue cable with phone socket-type connectors on each end, and also a "wireless USB adaptor", that looks like a memory stick. Might these be required to sort me out?
If you're fed up of all this don't worry, I'll go back to PC World and ask for a plain English idiot's guide!

admin is the user name and password for the first bit

you then need to enter your broadband details once you are past that screen
you do not need your existing modem plugged in, this replaces it
if you cannot find a cable let the Laptop find the Netgear Wireless router and connect to it, then when you have a connection just open internet Explorer (it will not connect to the internet) then type in the 198.168.1.1 and try and set up from there

That's what it looks like, but as I am only trying to run one connection i.e. my laptop then I don't think I need it do I?
I did put my Broadband username/password in but still no joy. Will try again in case I did something wrong.
Thanks again - bet you're glad you logged on now (not!)

no, you don't need that but the thing is useful if you ever get a desktop again
passwords can be case sensitive
make sure you have chosen PPPoe/PPPoa as the type of connection
are the lights stable on the router now ??Ex forum ambassador

"Power" light is stable, "status" is flickering about twice a second, "WLAN" is flickering rapidly. The bar below those, with 1, 2, 3, 4 is unlit. Maybe there should be a light against "1" to indicate recognition of my laptop?

Have you plugged your phone line into it?
1 will only light if you have plugged in an ethernet (blue) cable into port 1, and have a live PC on the other endEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
It is not plugged in to the phone line at the time of writing, as the phone connection is in use for the usb-connected modem, without which I can't get an Internet connection until this problem is sorted out. Thanks for the explanation as to the lack of lights in that part of the router Albertross.
If I swap over from modem to router in the phone socket, I get dumped out of the Internet

what model is the router? you are going to have to plug the phone lead in to setup the internet at some point. It is easier to setup using a wired connection (blue lead), rather than wireless.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
