Car boots / Ebay / local paper - which is best?

Hi All

I have a few items I'd like to sell, I don't know which is best place to put them to sell for best price, i.e. paper, car boot or ebay.

Trainers (3 lots) - not been used too much, my mother was told to buy specific ones to help her knee problem but they didn't help and she had to have surgery anyway.

An old Playstation with 2 controls and 2 games (boxed).

A stereo (Micro type) ideal for a kids bedroom - I got it as a freebie and I have a stereo system which I don't use myself already!

Do Eternity rings sell quite well on ebay too? I've tried selling mine to local jewellers but never at right time so they don't want it - I don't expect much for it as he was a cheapskate anyway ;) .

I've got to do a car boot and will be contacting the local paper to try and sell an old mountain bike I have in shed.

I've got a few electrical items that I don't use, would these be viable to try and sell at a car boot sale or not bother? They're all in working order, but I don't expect much for them a few quid at most, viable or not?

Would it be feasible to put a ME page on ebay - my main aim is to get a bit of money for my parents as they're planning to have a nice holiday to Oz / NZ as my mother's just been told she's in remission? :j

TIA

  • Electrical goods often sell at car boot sales, though you should remove the plugs unless you've had them safety-checked by an electrician. That's probably the best place to sell your mocro stereo system. I'd also try the boot sale for the ps1 - they're not worth a great deal, so on eBay bids tend be low because postage costs quite a bit. The trainers may be best at a boot sale for similar reasons, although some types sell well on eBay. Jewellery can sell OK on eBay, but only if you know the size any rings (since, unlike a boot sale, your customer will have no opportunity to try it on before purchase) and your camera is capable of decent close-ups.

personally i would try the car boot first of all - i did one last sunday and made £100! (just from old toys etc)

car boots are a bit better as people can make offers on the item and you can haggle with them and if its a nice day its great!

but.... they are hard work, escpecially if you have a lot to sell

yeah ebay is also good, but remember the ebay fees and postage costs. Also you can have some problems (very rarely) with no payment and delay in payment!

but overall, its what you think is easiest and how much running around you want to do!

and my advise is compare the things you have to sell to the things on ebay already and work out how much you could get and see if many people are interested in the item!

hope all of that makes sense

    Good Luck

    Thanks for your useful advice.

Contains Mild Peril - I will if I am able to unplug the electrical items and give the buyers (if any) the plugs so they can't complain! I suppose sell the two games indivudially?

I've included the ring size on ebay and about 20 people have looked at it so far - will see this time next week I suppose. I can always try again at jewellers later in year otherwise.

Claire - I have plenty to go towards a car boot - just got to get the nerve up to do one of them, have already put 2 boxes of clothes ready and some of my shoes can go towards a try and some of my parents stuff can also go.

Have plenty of toys, some electrical equipment, plenty of items that are good enough to sell (even for a £ each) rather than being in this house and better money in my pocket / bank than having to find places to keep the clutter all the time.

The car can hold quite a substantial amount of items and I intend to fill it up before putting the table in there so I plan to sell as much as possible and hope that the stuff I have is ok to sell. Books, toys, magazines, electrical clothes, shoes - do things like CD boxes sell? I'd rather have the money than them cluttering up this place now and they've been empty for a while as I treated myself to a bargain a few years ago.

Ah well more finding stuff to go to car boot now I suppose - doing it in stages or I'd get bored! Hopefully I can raise as much cash as Claire has.

when i did the car boot it was great!! at car boots you can really sell anything! i had a really old toy hoover which was really rubbish to me........ and at the last min a man gave me £1 for it!!! but like i said you can start the prices high then get lower because people will always haggle!

one tip is to not price some of the stuff, as then if you see people interested, you can just say a price or ask them to give you an offer!!

£100 was just 1/4 of my attic, still 3/4 of the attic to do through!

it is hard work, especially up and down those ladders, but well worth it in the long run!!

good luck, have fun and make lots of money!!
