Gym Membership Cancellation after a few days

Options
A few days ago, less than a week in fact only 6 days ago, my wife for my birthday kindly got me membership to David Lloyds Gym.

However i am not a gym person, and i dont think i will ever use it. Ive just bought a bike and enjoy using that instead.

So tonight she went back and tried to cancel, but they have told her that this is impossible and we must pay for 3 months membership (£270 Quid)

Surely this cant be right. I have never been to the gym. Isnt there a grace or cooling off period which could be applied?

Surely your wife would have the T&C's still? Would be worth reading, they probably had her sign something so state it is a minum of 3 months i would imagine.

All gyms want monthly memberships 3 months normally minumun in my experiance. Thats an expensive gym though!

Why? if people read the terms and are still happy to join, who's fault is it if they change their mind?
If you sign up to a broad band provider/mobile phone or the like for 1 year would you expect to get out of the contract for free because you had a change of heart?
I'm fed up of people coming on here regarding trying to cancel gym memberships and how to go about it for free. If you don't think your going to get the benefit of it then DONT JOIN in the first place...
  • Myself and Daughter joined a Gym in April, and after several visits we found that we were not happy with this as it was full of body builders and not to our taste.
however I have tried to cancel our membership several times, only to be told that we can't do this as we had signed for 36 months,( which was not explained to us at the time). I have wrote them several letters explaining that we are in financial hardship and unable to pay.. their answer was to try and find someone to take on the membership.. this has been found to be impossible. I am now stuck paying for a gym that I don't use and need help to cancel it..
    HELP!!!!!:(

36 months - 3 years? Blimey that's one **** of a contract. In this case, I'd get down to citizens advice to see if they can do anything, contracts can't be unfair. But next time, read what you are signing, yeah? Don't just wait for them to tell you stuff.

But on a 3 month rolling contract, no, there's no way out. And I don't think it's unfair of David Lloyds to hold you to it. A contract is a legally binding commitment, not something you sign while you think about it for a few days, or can just change your mind about. After all, if you'd signed up all keen and then they got in touch a few days later and said, no we've changed our minds, you can't be a member after all, you'd be p'd off.

OP, I mean this in the nicest way, but if your wife knows you aren't a gym bunny but got you the membership anyway, she's dropping a heavy hint there.
