Cheap runaround

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on buying a car. I live in London so won't be commuting, it'll just be for going to the shops, visiting friends and the occasional weekend away, probably around 6000 miles a year.

I'd like something half decent but am having trouble justifying the cost of a new car to myself. In fact I test drived a Mini Cooper yesterday but I can't really justify the cost..... Nice though!

I'm thinking either second hand, something a couple of years old, or going for one of these deals you sometimes see for a cheapo new car with payments of £99 a month.

Other considerations, I want to apply for a mortgage later in the year so don't want to restrict the mortgage I can get too much.

Any advice would be grateful, cheers!
Phil

How about a Toyota Aygo - 61mpg average and £40 a year road tax due to low CO2 emissions. Oh and the insurance is group 1! It's about £6.9K new.

Yeah thought of that. I hired a car a couple of weeks ago and got one of them - not bad actually.

I've been looking at the Citroen C2 today. Seems a nice little car and Citroen are doing some good deals on them at the moment - the SX has all the extras too, electric windows, remote central locking, air con, etc etc. Hmmm, think I'll try and get one on a test drive to give it a spin.
