3 rats vs 2 rats and xmas problems

  • I had rats a long time ago and I loved them. They were so friendly and had brilliant personalities. I had 3 also for the reasons stated above.
I also found that cats don't know what to do with rats. The have a curiosity in them but are not attracted to chasing them as they do with mice. Must be because they are much bigger. On researching I found that as a norm cats are quite happy to live with rats. The dog didn't bother with them either.
My cats and dog were very happy playing together with the rats and I had plenty of the rat sleeping with cat sleeping with dog moments in front of the fire.
I suppose everyone has different experiences with pets and their interactions with each other but as a general rule, cats and dogs are ok with rats but not mice.

I had similar experiences as yours Ruby Moon when it came to the rats interacting with other family pets. They got along fine with all the cats, dogs and rabbits alike (my rabbits were house rabbits too) and none of these posed any threat or harm to the rats either. They would often all curl up the sofa together with us in the evenings :)

  • The new pups are female. I didn't fancy being overrun!

The dogs aren't at all interested in the rats. They've sniffed noses with Moz but that's as far as it went. The cat is another matter, he's a farm cat and has caught rats and even large rabbits before now. It'd take more than two weeks to get him to view them as anything other than food. Plus I shouldn't mess with his predatory instinct ;) he's still keeping the wild rat population in check.
I don't think I actually said, but the cat and dogs aren't mine, they live with my parents.

Is there a reason that the rats can't live in the bedroom you use whilst at your parents? Presumably you could leave the door closed during the day more easily than the bathroom.
