faulty zip - North Face jacket

Options
I purchased a North Face waterproof jacket from a well known outdoor equipment store within the last couple of weeks.

I would be happy with my purchase but for the discovery of a fault with the zip which sometimes snags. I don't want the zip to fail completely later on so I returned to the store today with proof of purchase. The supervisor saw the fault but said he would have to return the jacket to North Face for inspection. He disclosed that the jacket would have to be sent to Belgium for this to happen. As this would leave me without a jacket, I left the store for the time being.

My question is that as my purchase is less than one month old and is in as-new condition isn't the discovery of a potentially serious fault and the failure of the store to offer a replacement (or refund) an infringement of my statutory rights?

I want the jacket but not one with a faulty zip.

Can anyone offer advice? Thanks if you can or for reading this post.
