after a certain amount of time(over 30 days with argos) you are eligable for a repair or exchange. The entitlement changes from item to item. Kettles , irons etc are normally straight replacements, but things like high value eg xbox, PS, hifis, tvs etc are subject to a repair in most cases.
you usually can only get a refund if the item was faulty within 30 days.
No that's not right. You are quoting Argos policy, but that does not supercede your rights under the Sale of Goods Act. OP was entitled to a replacement, refund or repair on a faulty item by law. Martin has lots of info on this if you search the main site for the Sale of Goods Act.
No-one should be fobbed off by CS who say items have to be repaired - well done to the the OP for getting the desired outcome!:oPRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

7 weeks is practically no time when returning something. When you buy something it should work for a fair amount of time to be considered fit for purpose.
I once returned something to Argos quite literally only a couple of days short of a year from buying it and got a full refund.0 -
Good call Coupon-mad, I was going to say - never confuse companies policy with your rights.
Chances are, they'll be pants (and I don't mean nice pants!)
Doing my best as a contrarian investor...property, banking...let's see how it goes

Argos are the easiest shop to return an item to ever. They will more or less swap anything for you every time, providing you have the receipt. I vary rarely get quesitoned when taking items back there. Refunds can be slightly more difficult after 16 days or if an item is excluded from the "16 day money back guarentee".The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)0

Direct from DTI:
Q11. The retailer has said that a repair is "disproportionately costly" and insists I accept a replacement as an alternative. Must I accept this?
Yes, and vice versa if you request a replacement and this is "disproportionately costly". However, remember any remedy has to be carried out "without significant inconvenience" and within a "reasonable time" for the consumer. Remember that you could also seek damages instead.

Hope it clears up the idea that everything must be instantly replaced.

I bought a flat screen monitor from Argos 3 months ago which developed a fault just under 8 weeks after purchase.
I took the monitor back to Argos for a replacement only to be told that they would only send it off to be repaired. At the time the monitor broke I was in the middle of preparing a witness statement for court on Monday morning (it was Friday afternoon) and I desperately needed my monitor to finish it off.
The manager in the store was adamant that I was not getting a replacement or a refund. I called their HO there and then only to be told the same thing. I explained I was a solicitor and I knew my rights, etc. but still no joy.
I then called Trading Standards to double check as this particular field of law is not my forte, and they told me that Argos WERE within their legal rights to refuse anything other than a repair as it was nearly two months old.
Several days later I wrote an official letter from my Company and I eventually got a refund.
I definately will not be buying anymore electrical items from Argos.0 -
Hi guys just found this forum and as an employee i thought i'd stick up for them a bit.
As i understand the repairs situation (i could be wrong but i think i've got it right) We have a list on our intranet of all the products which MUST go off to for repair. This is not dictated by Argos but the manufacturers themselves, meaning that if we return a damaged item back to the manufacturers we would not get our money back on the item because they requesed it be repaireed first. This is usually on more expensive items becuase of costs involved for manufacturers refunding Argos.
The company policy and im fairly sure the consumer law is that after 30 days the item can go for repair.
I do feel for the people who end up without their items especially in some cases when its a home telephone  . Remember life isn't always easy for an argos employee0 -

Why did you just not buy another monitor for the weekend, and return when done? They would have refunded you under their 16 day money back garantee.
Argos are usually very good when it comes to returning stuff.. My father bought a watch from Argos some 8 months before it broke.. I took it back without a receipt and they swapped it for a new watch, and I even got another 12 month garantee. :T0 -

Thats Argos policy which does not properly reflect your legal rights which are far greater. Read up on this..0
