Has it always been slow to load up. If so it could be your pc isnt very much up to spec (depending on what you use it for)
1st thing to do is remove all adware spyware etc.
run your anti virus program 1st making sure the virus list is up to date(if you havent got one get something like AVG).

then run adaware, spybot followed by ccleaner and regseeker. these are very easy to use but if you need help try going on there website or google it.

If you look at the bottom right hand of your screen you will see some icons..these are the icons that load up when window starts..the more you have the more time it will take to load up. Make sure the anti virus and firewall are up..then you can choose which to remove (least used) and which to keep (most used) to change click start..run.. and then type msconfig

the furthest right tab will be your start up programs...by un ticking the boxes it will stop these programs from loading when you start windows.
make sure you know what you are unticking as it could cause problems if you remove ones that are needed...again try googling the names to see what they do
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • I had similar problems with XP startup.

My support line advised me to follow the same procedure as rygon describes, but also to access the following link http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and type in each filename on the left of the msconfig startup list into the search box. The website then advises whether the file is required or not. You can then check or uncheck the boxes in the msconfig with some confidence (which I was certainly lacking before!).

The difference it made was a miracle!!

    Good luck

if you download spybot and turn on advanced tools mode then there is a start up manager that shows you what they all are

might be also worth running through this

When you power up depress F5 to hit boot options.

When options are displayed boot into 'last known good configuration' and start from there.

he's getting a "good" boot up

it's stuff like Quicktime, messenger etc that install themselves on start up (not boot up) that are slowing it down :)

Once your PC has finally booted...

Click Start>Run and type 'msconfig' - hit enter
Now click on the startup tab.
This will list all the non-system services (e.g. non essential) that startup when your PC does. Simply untick the ones you don't want and they will not start when you boot up :T

You should read what I wrote correctly.

There are a 1,001 different reasons why ones desktop may not start up fast.

I suggest 'bobby' s/he installs control panel start up from here

Then s/he can make their own choices and visually see the options rather than getting their hands sticky using msconfig.

did read what you said :-

what you are now mentioning is a "Start-up Manager" , which is what I am saying...Quicktime Realplayer and 100 other unrequired start-up entries look for updates to their programs each time you log on which slow down your start up.

Spybots Start-up manager tells you what 98% of them are and if they are required or use your program or use your one with start-up list meantioned in "Pensioners" post.

"last Known Godd Configuration" will only boot up as per the last successful log on and he logs on ok every time so it will only do the same boot as before ??

just do spyware and virus scans then download ccleaner its very good and help cleaning your system and there also is a startup option where you can delete programs that are not needed on startup like quicktime.......
