Does anyone know anything about cars?

I have an old Rover Metro 1.1L J Reg 1991, the problem I am having is that the engine keeps trying to stall when you are not using the accelerator if you know what I am trying to say.

It's my first car and I don't really know much about them so my father had a look at it today and we replaced the spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor arm.

But the problem is still happening it keeps trying to stall and does stall if you do not give it some gas it even happens when you are at a junction and you do not have your foot on the accelerator.

By the way the spark plugs all had carbon deposits on then and the rotor arm was a bit corroded/warn and the distributor cap had particles in it.

Thanks

Is it old enough to have a carburettor rather than fuel injection?

If so, my old Lancias used to have similar problems at times when some crud got caught in the carburettor jets and would intermittently block the fuel flow. It may be worth unscrewing the jets and blowing through them to clear any junk out. With the Lancias it was about a five minute job, no idea about a Metro.

try increasing the tick-over, this is a small screw at the end of the throttle cable on the carburetor.

If it's fuel injected then clean out the throttle body with carb cleaner and also check that the idle bypass valve is all cleaned out too.

If it's a carburettor then remove and clean the carburettor with carb cleaner.
    Happy chappy

had a similar problem with my fiat 131. cleaned the carb and also added a fuel filter in line before the carb. no problems since
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

get the idle jets adjusted so it idles between 800-1000 rpm. it'l take up slightly more fuel, but it'l sort the problem out. Same thing happened to my old nissan-it was a carburretor

The forum ( back room) on http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/home/index.htm is a useful source of info on cars

I had an old Austin Metro that did exactly that as well from new. Never did find out what was wrong with it. A couple of main dealers tried and failed to fix it and I went to several independents as well.

In the end I had the garage tweak something in the fuel system and provided I didn't want more than 5mpg it was fine. Couldn't get rid of it fast enough and have never bought an Austin/Rover car again.
