Glad you are feeling more positive now Tes. From what you have told us, I definitely feel you are doing the right thing.

Get an internet connection as soon as you can when you move in as we can be your lifeline when/if times get tough as you work your way through the house.

Yes, I will definitely give you updates as to how its going. The number one priority is to pay off the debt so I am waiting to post the debt at its highest so that I can show progress. Its very depressing to think it will go up but now the school fees are almost finished we will be able to throw more money at it. I am also saving a small proportion of money but its mainly to cover the move so that we dont sink into further debt. I would like to be completely debtfree, ideally, as then we could spend on the house with a clear conscience. However, a little magnolia paint wont go amiss and I also saw that our nice bathroom cabinet (which i promised to leave as we were desperate to sell the house), is in the Ikea sale for £9.50. I will probably buy 2 because we are planning an en-suite (dream on tes) but i was rather pleased to see that.

Thanks, yes, we should be exchanging contracts on Monday. We have all agreed on 3rd July but I will keep you posted.

we too had lived in our previous home for 21 years, had done everything possible to the house and were very happy..also we were looking forward to being mortgage free in a couple years..over a few months we began to see the area surrounding us deteriorate rapidly and sometimes felt afraid to venture out after dark.. we decided then to sell up whilst we had a chance and get out..our new home tripled our mortgage and had no heating, needed rewire, new bathroom, new kitchen etc. but from the day we moved we could honestly say it felt like home.. to be able to sleep peacefully and not have to worry about what was happening outside with the only sound to wake you up was the birds singing .. well that is priceless..GO FOR IT AND TAKE THAT MOVE BECAUSE IN A FEW MONTHS THE OLD HOUSE COULD BE WORTHLESS.

I am really suprised to hear about areas going down so rapidly.I would be very interested in what actually happened.I live in an O.Kish area,I have lived in better, but it seems to be the same as when we moved here a number of years ago.
  • Oh well, this time ext month you should be living in a better area and making it your own! Good luck!

I was talking about this to my neighbour the other day, she said that when she first came to live here this area was thought of as very desirable and houses very rarely came up for sale here. She is as dismayed as I the way things have gone, and it is very alarming to see houses nowhere near as nice as your own in different areas, (not very nice areas either), going at £20-£30,000 more. I suppose it can happen anywhere but it started here about 5 years ago, maybe a bit longer when the kids from the nearby council estate began to grow up. ive got nothing against council estates but I know some of the kids that cause the trouble and thats where they come from. A couple of bad families moved in here and their kids began to attract the troublemakers from the council estate and as its a green, they began to congregate outside. All kinds of trouble went on, fights, knives, drinking parties just outside our door at all hours of the night, damage to property and cars. It was very frightening and the residents began to have regular meetings with the local MP. The police were on a regular patrol every few hours but the yobs just laughed at them. Theres a dispersal order on this green now but it is still scary. We are getting out while we still can.

We moved into a small house which was in a terrible state and in desperate need of an extension a couple of years ago. We still aren't sure if it was a good move or not! The garden is beautiful, but we have spent a lot of money and we still have a lot more to do.

One thing we did was contact the vendor (through the estate agent & solicitors) and get permission to come into the house between exchange and permission. That gave us a chance to rip out the horrible old carpets and put cheap new ones down, get some of the rewiring done and wash down the walls before the house was full of our furniture. If you could get access to the house even just to spring clean as best you can before moving day, that might make things a bit less stressful for you.

Edited to say - whoops, I meant exchange and completion of course!

That is a really good idea that I had not thought of.
