Higher mortgage, higher debt and a shell of a house.

  • Just a suggestion as you seem to have decided to buy the house (which I think I would have too so you are gaining money not losing it as prices rise!) - I had replacement windows done in my house a couple of years ago and the company who did it suggested replacing a very small window at the back of the house with patio doors - what a HUGE difference to light and use and everything and it cost less than £1000 - now I know that is a lot of money but if it would make such a big difference and maybe change the way you feel about the house it might be worth looking to see if that is a possibility. Good luck with the move anyway.

OH wants to wait and save up because he wants those designer glass folding doors at the back of the house. I think they will cost a fortune but dont mind as long as we have paid off all the debt. He seems really determined to pay it all off.

    Also Tes,

You have chosen wisely with your hubby, of course he can do so much of the work too saving yourself a small fortune. Pity me, when I moved into this place I had to pay a handy man to put my shower screen up, every little job I had to pay someone to do until my dad could get a weekend off work to come and drill curtain rails up etc.

Also you might be surprised what you can get in the way of decorating and building materials etc cheap by going through quidco and so forth. Make sure you sell literally everything you wont need for the new house on Ebay, bumping up the coffers- as IM sure you will.

I bet you cant wait to finally move what with all this indecision and hassle going on, at least to have made a decision, stick to it, and power on

    Hugs to you

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Yes, thats what I said to OH. Lets just sign the contract and do it. It will be better once we move because we've waited for so long. Yes, he can turn his hand to any job, carpentry, plastering, bricklaying, electrics, you name it he can do it. I am lucky.

Hi tes, just read this thread and wanted to send some support.

It can be very daunting the whole moving situation especially if you are leaving a fabulous house to move to somewhere where it needs it all doing again.

But you know what? It will be worth it. In fact the moment you move in and get the star drops & magnolia paint out, I bet you will feel a surge of excitement and challenge.

And who knows, perhaps this will be the catalyst your son needs....perhaps he can get involved in sorting the place out too? Getting away from an area dogged by violence surely will help his outlook on life & confidence.

I am glad you have decided to go to the new house. You have to be safe. The incident re: someone in the garden made me like this:  Love, you have to move and leave all that behind don't wait for something worse to happen. Run like the wind!

It's terrible that this country is spiralling downwards the way it is, it makes me so angry.

By the way/if it helps....I LOVE our house (even the recent burglary hasn't put me off) but when we viewed it it was a pigsty....seriously a real disgusting pigsty. It took us 2 weeks to clean it thoroughly when we moved in, we found dried up old cat poo, we had to rip up carpets & lino, I insisted the toilet seat was replaced the day we moved in (_pale_ ) worked on the garden no end, and so on & so forth.

You know what? I wouldn't have had it any other way though because now we have released this house's true potential and it looks so much better, the neighbours have all said how much better it is now (they seem pleased we've moved in :o ). And WE did it :D

I'm glad you got it off your chest, but come on honey, chin up. It's going to be hard work but it's not forever, however the benefits hopefully will be.

is that although the house will take ages to do up, you will be able to decorate to your tastes.

The problem with moving into a house that is you tend to fall into the trap of living with it.

We've still got the same carpet in the hallway/stairs as was here 9 years ago when we moved in.......and its the lovely floral stuff! (no offence to people who love floral carpet!)

    Hi Tes,
There's lots of wise words already here.
Just a suggestion, but how about applying for some help on DIY SOS? I've never actually watched it, so can't claim to know if there's any particular criteria as to who can and can't qualify.
(edit: just had a closer look at the page, it says you must have attempted some repairs and failed & be prepared to contribute towards cost of materials).

Here's a link anyway to the form that you need to complete to apply to appear on the program:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/homes/tv_and_radio/diysos_form.shtml

Maybe there's other similar programs or schemes? Also, if you or OH are in receipt of any benefits, maybe you would qualify for a grant from the local council for necessary improvements? My neighbour recently had her rewiring paid for, and was told that they also give it for central heating.

HTH and good luck. If the area is nice that you're moving to, I'm sure you'll be happy there eventually.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)

Just wanted to send a hug as you sound overwhelmed which is no surprise as moving is one of the most stressful life events at the best of times! Try & turn it round to a positive & a bit of an adventure; fresh start; you can make it your own and have great fun finding bargains to do it up with! No it wont be Buckingham palace but its yours! When I got my little flat (would also kill for a garden!) it was a complete mess; no heating, disgusting infested carpet, revolting kitchen (still the same one but I painted it!) and bathroom now 6 years later its a different flat! Sanded floors, no yuccy wallpaper or carpet and all done on a budget & I love it (just as well as been overvalued so cant move anyway!!)....Just try & push through the feelings of dispair and gather yourself for the challenge! BIg hugs...

Thank you all of you for all your kind words of support and advice. Once again you have reassured me and helped me to come to a decision. I feel much better now about moving and feel as if we are doing the right thing.

I am glad you have decided to move.
I think a tin of paint will go a long way to cheering it up . I moved in to my house a year ago and still have so much to do. I started with painting the worst rooms.

The bathroom needed about three coats of tile paint!!!

I bought stacks of sari fabric from a sari shop and made some gorgeous curtains for some of the rooms (the fabric is gorgeous and really cheap)

I also have a seperate account in my back so as well as paying debts off i put a small amount away when i can to go towards doing up the next room on my list.....

GIve it a couple of weeks and you will love it
