MBNA proof self employed

What a great community this is, congratulations to you all, this is my first post but like so many others have gleaned massives of help and encouragement already. So a big thank you.

I am trying to reclaim PPI back from several loans and credit cards so I'm sure I will be asking for loads of help. My first one is..... my husband who is self employed had a credit card from A&L which was converted to MBNA March 2003. They have sent a long letter saying we had plenty of opportunities to read T&C and cancel. The PPI has been cancelled now. However they are asking for proof of husband being self-employed before they can continue with claim. They need documentation showing him paying class 2 national insurance and have given a web site for hmrc which I have gone on but cant find the place to retrieve the info required. Has anyone else had to do this? and how did you get info. I have bank statements showing D/D to HMRC but doesnt say Class 2.

Hope someone can help!

    Hi and welcome.;)

I'm sure someone will be along to advise and help you on this one shortly.

However, some policies can still cover is self employed, if you do not have the policy details, request for these.

I would maybe contact the information commissoners office (ICO) who should be able to advise on how you should be able to collect information on the details you require to prove to the banks, they should come up with some suggestions on this for you.
Details of contact of ICO here:
    https://www.ico.gov.uk/Global/contact_us.aspx

I would also check through the ICO website, you may come across something useful on there to give you some ideas.

Hopefully someone will be along soon, good luck with this.;)

it is quite normal and acceptable for companies to request information that backs up your claims. Unfortunately, people do try it on and using the self employed excuse is a common fraud by some claimants.

A letter from his accountant. A copy of his tax return sent in. A copy of the acknowledgement of the tax return from HMRC often has business details on it. A copy of the letter sent by HMRC letting him know what the payments will be. The bank statement showing the transactions will also show the business account title (even if they dont specifically say class 2, the 4 weekly payments will be easily identified as HMRC and the amounts will match the class 2 contribution).

Or a letter from HMRC confirming the period he has paid class 2.

  • Thanks Di3004, thought I'd pass on this number maybe somebody else will find it useful.
Husband has phoned HMRC 0845 915 4655 (NI contributions for self employed) they have confirmed that he has been self employed since 1990 and is up to date with contributions (phew). They are sending us written confirmation of this info but will take about 6 weeks, will keep MBNA informed too.
  • Thanks Dunstonh for your advice will send bank statement with letter to MBNA : and let them know HMRC sending confirmation of self employment in about 6 weeks time.
