This made me laugh, it's soooo true.

I try hard to make sure that there is enough for the meal we are having and that any leftovers will be realistic enough to save rather than someone can't 'just leave that little bit'. They're getting used to the fact now that ds likes the leftovers for packed lunch. Now he's in the 6th form there's a microwave they can use. Saves making sandwiches.

In the end, it's about not wasting anything I think. I had a whole hm loaf practically untouched, so I got a tin of corned beef out and made it into sandwiches for packed lunches and froze them. Now that's 5 occasions I don't have to make sandwiches! Ha!

Well, last words from me Rebekah, cos I don't want to sound like a bossy boots either, but if CCP's in 'big sister mode', then I'm in 'mum mode' and I can't just cut and run now...... Have read some of your previous posts and would really recommend you check out with your GP on this one. We all need sufficient calorie intake of nutritious and varied food to help us avoid health issues in the future.

    Best wishes

  • Im a bit like Justamum and Rebekah24, i have a very small appetite and i too wouldnt be able to eat 3normal meals a day. I seldom have breakfast but do have a banana at 11. Then just a cup a soup and sandwich and maybe a yoghurt for lunch. Sometimes i just have a sandwich for tea as i often dont feel hungry. I get very full quickly so i couldnt just have one large meal a day, but if i do have dinner in the evening im normally full until at least 11am the next morning. I guess some people just dont have big appetites and i only eat when im hungry,
  • I avoid snacking and nibbling in order to economise but I would never eat fewer than three meals a day, it's not good for you. If I didn't feel hungry I would have three small meals instead of one big one - although that never happens cos I have an active job and am always needing to refuel:D

we have our 3 main meals a day but i know if i had gottn 2 packs of whoopsied meat with say 4 pieces of meat in each,,instead of opening the 2 packs i'd freezo one,,and maybe have a tiny piece of meat for myself and everyon else would have there norm,,they dont notice that i do this of course:)

I do the same. If I'm cooking a meat dish I'll have less meat myself so others can have their portion. Also, I am guilty of saying I'm "not hungry" if there isn't quite enough to go around. The way I see it, I'm the mother, and if anyone has to go without it should be me and not my kids. I do try to cook wholesome, filling and inexpensive meals so usually there is enough. But, you know, some days I have toast.

I haven't cut down on food in terms of nutrition and quantity (much as it would be beneficial for me as I am rather on the plump side!). What I have done is cut out almost all ready made meal (except for occasional veggie sausages) and cook everything from scratch.

Personally I have recently cut out fish, eggs and dairy, so from an almost-vegetarian who ate very occasional fish I am now fully vegan. The rest of my family still eat dairy and eggs but DH and DS occasionally still have some fish, and DS very occasionally also eats meat. DD is vegetarian but still eats dairy and eggs.

If there is a little less than enough food (occasionally this happens if we have unexpected guests, mainly DS and DD friends) I let them have my share and make do with something else, but this does not happen very frequently.

I would not cut down on food for economy reasons because before hitting the expense of food there are so many other measures that can be implemented, so many expenses which are not vital to survival (internet, TV etc...). I feel fortunate that I can feed my family a good and substantial diet of freshly cooked and nutritious food, on a relatively small expense, by being careful how I shop and use food and also by applying well tested OS principles.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
