Why is it so hard to stop buying papers & magazines?

I am trying to get myself out of my debt mess and worked out that every day Mon - Sat, for the past 5 years I have bought The Sun 35p (on a Saturday 55p) along with a local evening paper 37p and then on a Sunday I buy the News of the World 80p?, The Mirror 80p? and The People 80p?.
I also get 2 weekly magazines on a Tuesday for 78p each, OK every Wed £2 and Now on a Thurs £1 per mag.
I know they are all full of rubbish, the same stories (half of them made up) but how the heck do I stop the habit of a lifetime? I walk past the paper shop every day and feel like I need to buy them.

1) take no money
2) start by only buying papers and no mags?

You spend £577 per year on newspapers and magazines

There is definitely room for cutting back!
I always go to BBC news website for the news, and digitalspy.co.uk for gossip. I'm probably just as addicted as you, but at least it's not costing me anything

I don't normally buy papers as I can read it all online and tend to use the BBC website for my news.
I only buy when there is a freebie that I want and that is not very often.
And I get 4 free newspapers through my letter box every week.
I have a hobby and the magazines are at least £3.50 a month. And there are about half a dozen a month to choose from. If I bought them all from the news agents that would cost me £252 a year
So i don't buy them at all now. Only sub when I can get 3 issues for a £1 of such like.
Why not get just one magazine on subs and keep that as a treat.
I just make sure that I pick up freebie mags from places like boots(free if you have an advantage card), Asda, tescos and somerfield.
Yeah not great but they glossy and I cand sit and read them over a coffee and they don't tax my brain to much.
If you want celeb gossip go to a one of the many free sites around. If I am bored I will take a look at https://www.handbag.com and look in the celeb gossip forum. And that gives me my fix with out putting my hand in my pocket.
I agree about don't carry money on you. if you don't have it then you can't spend it.

Thanks all! Will try and read online, its just nice to sit there at lunch time in work with a paper/mag but realising how much I spend its bloody stupid. Think I am going to limit myself to a daily newspaper and 1 mag a month to start with. I have just cancelled our local paper as I usually hear the interesting news from the gossips at work so no need for that!
With the not carrying money with me - I would end up coming home to get money and going back out! Yes I am that insane! Plus feel saver with a few quid in my purse.0 -

It is nice to spend part of your lunch break having a read. I got in to the habit of taking a book with me. Find some shade and read my book for a while.scw1 wrote:With the not carrying money with me - I would end up coming home to get money and going back out! Yes I am that insane! I know how you feel. I do like to keep the old pound or two on me. But as I literally have no money. Ok about £25 to my name I just don't carry it with me fullstop. I feel strange going out with an handbag.

I read in my lunch hour and this is exactly what i used to do this pre mse, then i changed to the metro (free on the bus) and now i am reading books. The reason i changed to books is you take longer to finish them, i have about 20 books sat here at home unread, books are eco friendly (ie you arnt throwing them away/recycling them once read) and most of all i can pick up books on ebay for as low as 99p

I know exactly what you mean. If it helps to know that someone else is suffering with you I've given up my Waterstone's and women's glossy mags habits. I took out a subscription to my favourite mag and I don't buy others. I do allow myself a couple of broadsheets at the weekend and I find the free mags & supplements last me through the week.Debt at highest May 2006: £27,472.24
