Possible Posting To Canada

Hi all,

After 9 years in the Infantry, hubby has decided to transfer to the Royal Signals. He's 2 months into the training and has recently put in his posing preferences... 2 posts in Germany and 1 in Canada.
Now, Germany I am fine with, we have been there before so I know what to expect. But Canada is a whole different ball game! I have no idea what to expect! Hubby seems to think that all we can take with us is what we can get on a plane? I'd hate the thought of not having my things around me. I'm not so fussed about the furniture etc, it's more personal stuff like my Tattty Bear collection (sad I know lol) and my son's toys and games. Also, If we can't take much with us we wouldn't be able to take much back once the 2 years is up? Would that mean that it would be pointless buying anything while we are out there? And what about xmas? We'd come home if we could, but supposed we have to ask for small gifts!!

Has anyone had a posting out there while they are married who can tell me a little bit more? I've got the other stuff like schools etc sussed.

I dont have any answers but Id like to wish you the very very best of luck
  • You'd still get a shipping entitlement worked out on rank and children. I think you get a similar entitlement as Cyprus, which is about 20cube m.This is which is more than enough to take beds, white goods and personal effects etc. Bearing in my the voltage is different and I'm not sure if you can get converters.

I'm sure someone would be along to give you more information, but you will get an allocation of a container on your posting. I'm in Germany and would have chose Canada given the choice! The only thing I'd worry about is, do you have pets? Germany would be the cheaper option, as you can take them in the car. If you do have any, start looking at pet passports now as they can take 7+months to sort.

  • Thanks for the replies :-)

We do have a dog! Hubby is sorting out injections and passport etc and if needs be the mother in law said she'd have her until things are sorted. Not sure what we'd do with the fish though lol!
I'd love to go to Canada but was under the impression that you don't get to take anything with you. I'd prefer Germany. We were in Osnabruck in '03 and I loved it.

    Hi Colliefrog,

Has your husband been posted (JPA Assignment Order) to Canada, or has he put it down as a preference.

Years ago when i left trade training (RAF), what you put on the preference sheet is different to what you may receive. I wanted Cyprus, i received north yorkshire.

    Regards,

    Alias

re canada. DD and her dh were there for 2 years. Obviously very cold in winter. They bought a 2nd hand vehicle when out there. They took their dog and were warned re coyotes attacking him on walks

Summer, millions of terrible mosquitoes. Covered head to foot

tbh they were glad to get back to uk
  • Thanks for the replies. It's just a preference at the moment. Just waiting to find out where we're going. I'm well aware that the chances are that we won't get where he's asked for but I don't really mind where we go! I feel like we're living in limbo at the moment. With him always been in an infantry regiment we've always gone we're the regiment is posted and always know well in advance where we're going. He's 2 months into the 6 month course to transfer so hopefully will find out soon.
