I want to replace my kitchen doors, is this the cheapest way ?

I have a very large kitchen with lovely granite worktops. The doors and kickboards are falling apart, handles loose etc. I would love to replace just the doors as the layout is fine. If it were just a matter of replacing the doors I don't think that would be a problem, it's just that there are pillars (ornate one's part of original units) and littles drawers taking up space I guess it would be hard to calculate. Also my husband say's there are an awful lot of end panels that will bump up the cost. |Does anyone how to go about this or can recommend a company they have used. Or in reality is a whole new kitchen often the cheapest option.

Thanks for any advice.

  • If it was just replacement doors, then it would be easy to do either yourself (by buying standard sized doors or making new ones from MDF or something similar), alternatively you could use a kitchen door replacement company.

However, as you are mentioning that the majority of the kitchen would need replacing, I suspect you would need a replacement kitchen. You could work with the original worktops that you clearly like, although you would need to speak with the fitter to ensure they are happy working with the granite - it is unbelievably heavy to shift around and liable to getting damaged.

  • It all depends on the type and level of finish you want to go for that fits in with your granite worktops. Sounds like an expensive look :)

I know doors can be ridiculously expensive to replace, even the knocked down price ones at MFI clearance are still £50+ per door. The end panels cost about the same too.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the doors falling apart, but any door can be reconditioned to a decent level if you have the time. If I were to refresh the look of my existing kitchen I would do the following...purely because I don't have a few hundred pounds lying around to buy new doors and I still live like a student (careful money management) all these years on.

    1. Kickboards - Nothing but a long plank of wood...some carved with a pattern, some plain. Pick a style you like from B&Q and screw in a couple of clips on the back to snap onto cabinet legs. Paint if necessary.

    2. Door handles - I suspect the threads have gone on your existing handles. So look at https://www.handleworld.co.uk for replacements, they have some nice looking ones for about £1 each. Otherwise dab a little super glue into the screw hole of your existing handles and re-screw the handle back in. Once the glue settles, they should be a permanent fixture on the door.

    3. If the surface looks worn I would just spray paint the doors. Prime the doors first, then spray on the color paint of your choice. The put a couple of coats of clear lacquer over the top to protect it. It'll come up nice and shiny.

You can probably do the above for well under £150, even that may be over budget! Otherwise if you don't have the time or inclination to be creative, then expect to pay more.

I would give it a go on one door, and see how it turns out...It'll cost you the price of a few spray cans £10-15. If it comes up nice then continue, if not, then get new doors. You'll only lose a tiny bit of money and time in the process. You may surprise yourself if it turns out well and save yourself a packet.

    Good luck.
  • Shame the OP didn't ask last year when B&Q were doing their doors for £1.
