First MOT

I brought my Vauxhall to the local authorised dealership for its third year service today. The car was first registered on 13 December 2006, therefore, its warranty is up on 13 December 2009.

I also asked that it be given its first MOT, thinking that if a major problem was discovered it may be better to find out and try to resolve it while the car is still under warranty.

I had a call a couple of hours later from a mechanic at the dealership who informed me that the MOT was not due until mid-January 2010 and that it was best to wait until then.

Even though I'm sure the MOT is due on 13 December, I told him not to go through with it. I have since been having second thoughts.

Does anyone think the dealership were trying to deliberately delay me taking the MOT until the car is out of warranty?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • If your car was first registered on 13 Dec 2006 then, as you state, your first MOT is due 13 Dec 2009. Check your V5C Registration Certificate for the date of first registration.

MOT's can be done up to one month early.

Best bet is to contact VOSA who deal with MOT's for advice.

As it was registered on 13th December, then that is when the MOT is due. You can have the MOT carried out four weeks in advance and have it dated on, therefore, suggest you get MOT done (by an independent garage :D) from the 14th November onwards, earlier the better in case there are any warranty issues.
