Where have all the bacon joints gone?

Options
I used to make good use of the fantastically good value Tesco Value smoked bacon joints in a particular recipe of mine.

I notice now that none of the supermarkets seem to do bacon joints now and they have all been replaced by gammon joints... at a suitably higher price, needless to say.

The lying Tesco aisle pointer has an arrow indicating 'bacon joints' but there have been none available for many months.

Shame.

  • Hi, just to let you know that Asda still do them in their smartprice - not sure of the price per kilo but we usually have a decent sized one for about £3 - £3.50. I have one in the fridge at the mo for the slowcooker one night this week.

Unfortunately, mysupermarket states that this is of the unsmoked variety. I need it to have plenty of bang flavourwise.

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
  • try a local butcher... they'd appreciate it, and you'd get the cuts/meat you want, and, who knows, they could still be there 10 years from now if we all keep using them!
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!

I've often wondered what the difference is between a bacon joint and a gammon joint and where ham fits into the equation. Can anybody enlighten me?

Co op always seem to have them. Much prefer bacon over gammon - the gammon joints tend to be quite tasteless. In fact, got one in the fridge at the mo although its unsmoked.

  • Try your local market as there is usually a good selection of both smoked/unsmoked bacon or gammon joints - better quality and cheaper than the supermarkets.

Bacon joints are a different cut from a different part of the pig - typically from the lower leg , there is a higher fat to meat ratio than with gammon joints.

Highly recommend cooking either in the slow cooker for guaranteed yumminess :D

  • I used to love a bit of boiling bacon years ago .We had a David Griegs locally to where I lived and they always kept them It was a lot cheaper than gammon but just as tasty. Shame we are losing our old cuts of meat.I am going to ask my local butcher if he will get some in as he is very good and will try to find what you want ,bet it won't be a big uneven lump of bacon at around 12/- though:)

Gammon comes from the leg of the pig, where as bacon joints are normally from the shoulder.
I think you will find Morrisons sell smoked bacon joints.
    Thanks for everyones usefull post`s:T
