Mirrors, to reflect what light you have.

Paint it white, big mirrors, for any new furniture (including kitchen cabinets) use glossy finishes.

exactly what i did, makes a huge difference. My flat was magnolia, painted it white -satin finishes so reflects light, glossy white furniture and it makes a huge difference. Am looking for glass coffee tables so the flat looks bigger and not full of furniture.

shiny paint not matt. they do some with sparkles in.
Good lighting, mirrors, light coloured furniture. Flooring - glossy to reflect more light.

Is this a full on basement, or does it have small windows around the top of the walls? Do you actually get natural light?

hi all--sorry so late getting back.
It is rented, so not able/not wanting to go overboard with the decorating.
It has very little natural light, big-ish windows at the front, then smaller ones at the back where there is a small bedroom.
He has just seperated from his oh, very unhappy and seems to like wallowing in the dark--suits his mood!!
we are going to take some stuff round at the weekend to help out a little.
Like the idea of mirrors and white furniture--poppysarah--what sort of flooring do you have in mind??
the walls ARE magnolia, might ask if the landlord will agree to us painting it white.

    some great ideas, many thanks
