Having spent the last 10 years in the industry and being fully FPC and CeMap qualified, the majority of my time has been back office working for lenders and understanding the industry. I have recently decided to move into the sales field and I dont know whether you will see this with stupidty or bravery, I am self employed so only get paid on the business I write.
If you are serious about doing it you need to invest more than just the time in doing exams, you need to invest time in learning in the real world. Its a bit like your driving test, you are taught how to pass the test and it is only when you get on the road for yourself, you really start gaining the experience to be a better driver.
Ronni - I am sure if you put your mind to it, the cemap exam will be achievable but as previously said, you may not know some questions if you have no experience in the industry as the training material does not cover everything.
Zoe - MM has offered her help and I would just add that if you do have to end up temping in a call centre - try and make it a financial services one, this way you will get some industry experience.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Hi
The £120 does include the exam aswell, which will be at your local driving theory test centre.
I have recently passed my CeMAP and am looking for a position as an advisor within a bank or building soc. I am currently employed at a building society as an advisor, but as we have a VERY low footfall combined with rubbish products i have yet to put my cemap to use!!! Can anybody recommend good companies to work for - and also those to avoid?!
sarahLead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.
wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!0 -

Sarah,
I think that working in any bank or building society you will constantly face the frustration of poor products, not because they are actualy poor but because there is always someone out there that can offer similar or better. The only way to get around this is to become whole of market and then you can always offer a great selection of products.
I am not whole of market however have a fairly extensive panel of lenders (36 at the last count) and we deal with comercial, european and can usually find something that is competetive.
I wouldnt want to recommend you at a company as I have found that a lot of how good a company is, is how your personality and work ethic reflects in the company that you work for.
You could take a leap of faith and start applying away from the warm comfort of a bank and building society and see how that goes as I am sure you wouldnt find it difficult to move back into this sector if it didnt work Regret doing something rather than not doing something.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Hi there
I am considering taking my Cemap in the next few months and was wondering how easy it should be to find a job. I dont have any office based experience, but I do have 5 years experience as a manager of a restaurant. Do you think companies would consider employing me at around 18k plus? I dont want to take the exam unless its likely that I can go straight in as I wont be able to afford my house with any less.
Thanks in advance for your help

I think you will find that the salary you required isnt too ambitious - your experience of financial services may count against you, however, if you demonstrate willing and an aptitude for the job then it shouldnt really matter.
Looking at your current job, you will no doubt work fairly long hours, you will have customer service skills, face to face customer skills so you are halfway there..

go homer, go homer!
LOL
For those that want to go straight into whole of market work, the M & E Network will take on trainee advisors - you are better working for a company who is part of M & E than going it alone, the learning only begins when you actually start the job. If you don't have an advisor to take you under their wing, you need some good solid support/compliance support - mistakes are costly in this industry and the best way to learn is to be mentored by another experienced broker.I am a Mortgage Adviser

I dont know. You mortgage advisers work so very hard and the margins just do not look that attractive for the amount of work you do.
Is £18k really what you expect annually or a minimum to make it work?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
