New boiler installation by Gas supplier

Our boiler is around 18 years old (installed when house was built) and is well overdue a replacement.
I understand that most energy suppliers will install a new boiler and central heating system and they offer flexible payment options. Has anybody had any experience of this or more info as I'm unable to pay up front for this expensive job.

Better to get a loan & shop around than pay the huge sums the gas suppliers will charge to replace a boiler.
What's wong with the boiler anyway? (other than you think it might be nice to have a new one that you can't really afford at present)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Ours in 18 years old and still perfectly ok
Are you having problems heating the house? Is anyone on benefits or something which may enable you to claim a grant?0 -
I have been told by a trusted gas installer that the boiler needs replacing as the bolts that hold the combustion chamber on have come loose and its dangerous (ie carbon monoxide poisoning).
I assume that the gas companies charge an arm and a leg then?0 -
If that fault is correct, then surely a Gas Safe registered engineer would have decommissioned and sealed it on the spot?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Why is it 'well overdue a replacement'?
Mine is 21 years old and plenty on here have much older boilers.
The beauty of the older boilers is their simplicity and there is very little to go wrong.
Modern condensing boilers are stuffed full of electronics(PCBs cost £hundreds to replace) and 10 years life is considered good.0 -
Yes he said he should have, but as a friend of the family he left it and told it needs to be rectified ASAP.0

Then I hope it's out of use or you've got a carbon monoxide alarm...No free lunch, and no free laptop

With friends like that, who needs enemies?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Im not a trusted installer, but surely loose bolts arent that difficult to replace?

Gas burning appliances do not normally produce appreciable amounts of Carbon Monoxide..that is simply a myth. They can only produce CO if certain conditions exist.
If your engineer thought there was a risk to health then he should have taken appropriate action. Its either safe to use or it isnt..no half way houses.
For info,my boiler is about 25 years old,its conventional flued and i am not worried about it.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
