My missus has decided she wants an Ipod for Christmas. Don't know why, I reckon a generic MP3 player would do the job for half the price.
Anyhow, that aside, what do the different models do ? I'm a complete numpty when it comes to gadgets, so what are the pros and cons of the Classic, Touch, Nano that I've seen advertised, or any others that may be out there ? Any advice on which is best ? I realise it's probably down to what she want to do with it, but I know nothing about them so any advice would be most welcome :-)

Well she at least has taste
quality is hard to value, a Lada gets from A-to-B but not in as much style, comfort or quality as a Bentley...
Have you looked and read the excellent model comparison here: http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/compare-ipod-models/ ?
The Classic has a hard disc and a huge capacity (160GB).
The Touch has Wifi, a large screen, many games etc. (8, 32 or 64GB) essentially it's an iPhone without the phone component.
The Nano (8, 16GB) is more of "just a music player", it is impossibly slim, but also has an FM radio, and small video camera built in.
All iPods can also play video.
The Nano won PC Pro's awards in this month's edition, against the other media players.
We have several iPods in our house, and I couldn't recommend them enough, superb devices.0 -
That's great, many thanks for the very helpful information. S'pose I should have thought to look on Apple's website first :-)0

If she wants something really small and thin with a radio and video camera, get an iPod Nano.
If she has an absolutely enormous music collection (20,000 songs +) and she wants to carry it all around with her, get an iPod Classic.
Otherwise, get an iPod Touch, which is an absolutely wonderful device. In addition to playing music and video, you can surf the web on it, check your emails, purchase songs form iTunes on it, subscribe to podcasts, and choose from over 100,000 different applications for it available in the iTunes Store.
Unless there's some overriding reason not to get it, the iPod Touch is the model you should go for.0 -
Agreed about the touch.
My wife bought an ipod touch for her music - that's the last thing she uses it for.
Having internet access without needing to fire up the computer is so convenient. The games keep my young daughter entertained, we can upload holiday photos and videos to it.
It's an amazing bit of kit.0 -
Just to hijack the thread... I was thinking of getting a netbook for when we travel, but might consider a Touch instead, ok I'll love all the features, but it'll be the WiFi I'll buy it for, what is the internet browsing like? Any limitations? I would be especially using corporate sites to connect remotely and the obvious ones like airlines for on-line check-in etc and google mail. Got plenty of Nano's and Shuffle's... Are you restricted to using Safari?0

Yes, Safari is your only option as far as I'm aware.
The internet browsing is very nice on it and quite intuitive. You could perhaps call into an Apple Store, or other retailer with it on display, and have a play around with it.
The main limitation is its lack of Flash support.0 -
Thanks Marty, it's been a while since I tried on, will have a look at the weekend.
Do you know if they'll give it Flash support, or not? Just thinking of sites this might affect...0 -

Anything's possible I guess, though it seems unlikely.
Steve Jobs indicated last year that the full version of Flash doesn't run well enough on a mobile device, and he doesn't consider the mobile version to be an adequate replacement.
Apple have instead been pushing open alternatives such as HTML 5 in an effort to reduce the use of proprietary plugins such as Flash.0 -
If you are on a budget (and who isn't) then each Wednesday at 10.00 am Apple open up their refurbished store until stock runs out. The refurbished iPod store link is just below the 'Why buy at the apple store' link in the centre of the homepage.
They've currently got previous generation Nanos at £85 for 8GB (30% off) and £99 for 16GB (32% off). It doesn't have the video camera but does play videos. They've also got second generation iPod touch.
If you use Quidco or similar I believe you can still get cashback too. Might enable you to get more bang for your buck!0 -

I suspect the advantage a netbook would have is the ability to use mobile broadband as well as wifi (if that's a consideration). There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.
