My DD is totally against using any Nestle products and so I don't buy them - well not knowingly, but I just saw on the supermarket own brand thread that Crosse & Blackwell are Nestle and they may Branston pickle and beans, waistine and all kinds of stuff which I like. Can anyone confirm that C&B are Nestle and can they tell me what other brands are Nestle. Don't want to start a big political argument here but DD is hard enough to feed as it is and she reads these threads!!!

Nestle bought Crosse and Blackwell in 1960

Why will she not eat it?“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -
Terrible.
But if we didn't buy from big business everytime we didn't like something they did, we'd never buy anything.
Still I admire someone with principles and I remember what I was like as a teenager. Everythings so black and white. Still is in some ways“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -
why dont we start a thread on this did you know that green and blacks are owned by cadburys and isnt the body shop part owned by nestle.
she'd end up not buying anything if she took it so seriously.0 -
Nestle bought Crosse & Blackwell in 1950 BUT sold it to Premier Foods in 2002 - see this link http://www.premierfoods.co.uk/brands/crosse.cfm.
So you can eat your Branston Pickle with a (relatively) clear conscience!!0 -

A lot of people, including me, are still boycotting Nestle. Their tactics of getting babies in developing countries "hooked" on free baby milk, which they promote as being healthier than breast continue. The result when the free milk runs out after the first few weeks is that the mothers are often unable to breast feed but they are also unable to afford the formula so they make it up weaker to make it go further and the babies become malnourished. Sometimes the mothers don't even have clean water to make it up with and, of course, babies are much more succesptible to water borne disease than adults. The World Health Organisation estimates that 1.5 million babies die each year due to unsafe bottle feeding. A code of practice was established in 1981 to combat this but Nestle continues to flout it. As far as I'm concerned bonnie, that is very serious.
And why does it matter that Green and Blacks are owned by Cadburys? I'm not aware of any boycott against them. Surely they own Schweppes which is a more ethical alternative to Coca-Cola?
I have to say that I think it's important to exercise our consumer rights responsibly because it's really the only power we have over these sorts of issues. The actions of multinationals in developing countries are practically unregulated. If their only interest is in the bottom line then the only way things are going to change is if enough people decide that it is an important enough issue to put themselves to the inconvenience of avoid their products so that exploitation ceases to be profitable. Please remember that if you buy Nestle products you are not simply doing nothing by being apathetic, you are giving your financial support to their business practices.
According to the list on https://www.babymilkaction.org Branston Pickle and Crosse and Blackwell are no longer associated with Nestle. I did a check and they were bought by Nestle in 1950 and sold on to Premier Foods in 2002. That list was last updated January 2005 so does not include the Body Shop though it does include L'Oreal.
You can find out what products are made or owned by Nestle straight from the horses mouth here. If you look at the websites of their "related companies" here
you can find out what products each of them makes from their websites.0 -
Thanks to all of you for your replies. I am glad about Crosse & Blackwell, but I was shocked at how many things Nestle makes. Ethical issues aside, it is scarey how much of the food production in the world is controlled by one company - no wonder small companies don't stand a chance!! I am really going to make more of an effort to support local greengrocers, butchers and so on, and to make my own stuff from scratch. I make more from scratch than most of my kids friends' families but still not enough.Jane

There isn't much work in this country as it is, if we all boycotted these companies and they took their buisness elsewhere we'd be the first to moan about having no jobs. It swings in roundabouts.0

if everyone who read about nestle stopped buying their products, it would have a huge impact on their profits........ if consumers all started to shift to other manufacturers then they would have to change their policies. i think the baby milk scandal was sufficiently shocking to stop me from ever buying nestle again - and if enough people objected, big business would have to start listening!
i refuse to buy anthing from nestle and also try to avoid coca-cola at all costs, but it's not actually that hard! the biggest issue for me was giving up various breakfast cereals and kitkats!!
if there can be so many happy vegans, who have a much more limited choice of possible foods, avoiding one manufacturer can't be so bad (that's what i tell myself anyway!).:happyhear0
