Problems copying to CD-R but not to CD-RW

I wonder if anyone can help with this problem please.
Using XP to copy files from the hard drive to a CD R disk gives this message:
"Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do? "
It works fine with a CD-RW.
I have tried several CD-R disks of different makes and it happens with them all.
The hard drive has 52GB of free space.
When trying to do the same thing with Nero/ Nero Express it starts to work and then stops when it is 23% of the way through.
I was trying to copy our holiday photos, but the same problem occurs when trying to copy even the smallest of Word files.
Thanks.

Have tried 3 Memorex 52X from a spindle of 25, a Maxcell CD-R 74XL straight from the shrink wrapped package and a brand new TDK d-view - all bought at different places over a period of time.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Right-click the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive, click Properties, and then look for the Recording tab.
If that doesnt work you will have to edit the registry (well maybe) to get the drive recognised, (see below)
If you are not comfortable editing the registry do not attempt.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Expand the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type backup of drives key, and then click Save.
Note You can restore this registry subkey by double-clicking the backup of drives key.reg file that you saved.
6. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the Volume{GUID} folder under Drives, where GUID is a 32-character hexadecimal globally unique identifier.
Note If you have more than one CD-ROM drive in the computer, an additional Volume{GUID} folder is listed for each drive.
7. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Drive Type.
8. In the Value data box, type 1 or 2, depending on the drive type, and then click OK.
The drive type should be 1 if it is a CD-R and 2 if it is a CD-RW.
9. Quit Registry Editor.
10. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
11. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
12. If the Recording tab is displayed, Windows recognizes the drive as a recordable device.
13. Click Cancel.
Note If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive, or CD-RW drive in the computer and the Recording tab is not displayed, an incorrect drive may have been configured as "recordable" in the Windows registry. To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:a. Follow steps 1 through 9 to edit the Drive Type value of the Volume{GUID} folder whose value you previously changed.
b. In the Value data box, type 3, and then click OK.
The drive type value of 3 indicates that the drive is a standard CD-ROM and is not writable.
c. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the next Volume{GUID} folder.
d. Follow steps 7 and 8 to change the Value data entry to 1 or 2, depending on the drive type.
e. Quit Registry Editor, and then follow steps 10 through 12 to confirm that the Recording tab is displayed in the properties dialog box of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive.0 -
Thanks very much for your help Quincy, I really do appreciate the time you have spent on this with such a thorough answer. I got as far as set 10 with no problems but when I click Start there is no My computer visible, when I click on the my computer icon on the desktop it does not have "Devices with Removable Storage" as an option; neither can I find that term when I look in the control panel - systems area - properties - device manager.
However the info from steps 1 -9 has shown one drive ( I assume the CD-RW drive) to have a value of 2 and the other drive (the DVD drive) to have a value of 3. This seems to be correct.
Looking at the properties of the CD drive I can find the recording tab and that has a tick in the box which says "enable CD recording on this device"
Mustn't the computer recognise the CDRW drive as being a recordable device since it will record to it when I use a blank CD-RW disk but will not record to it when I use a blank CD-R disk?
Any ideas as to where I am going wrong?
Many thanks0 -

Ok to show My Computer try this, Right Click a blank bit of the Taskbar and left click properties, Then select the Start Menu Tab then, Customeiz and the advanced, now scroll down to My Computer and select display as a link then Ok and Ok and now if you click Start, My computer can be shown and now you can right click that for properties.
P.S Right Click My Computer for Properties, But you want to click the My Computer Icon with one left mouse click.
Also no need to go to Control Panel for Device Manager, Just right click that My Computer Icon, Properties, hardware, Device Manager.
Edit: P.S My earlier post was a copy/paste

Thanks Quincy, have done that (my start section was in the classic mode)but I still cannot see the term "Under Devices with Removable Storage". When I click on My computer it shows me the different drives etc. When I look at the properties of the CD drive there is a recording tab present.
Is it important to get to the section "Under Devices with Removable Storage"?
Sorry about this!0
