    Debt-free and Proud!
The bailffs sound like proper scum. It's sometimes hard to believe that human beings are actually capable of being so vile but maybe I'm just niaive.

There's been some good advice above, and I particularly like the idea of contacting your local councillor. Generally they're able to get things done when us mere mortals can't.

Let us know how you get on! Did they come back this afternoon as threatened?

Well, since it's so sunny me and the OH went for a walk and we do feel a lot less stressed knowing that it's all a load of rubbish these debt agencies spout.

As for coming back and finding a note/the door kicked in - nope. Scaremongering. Sick. I wouldn't mind, but you'd think the council would work out I was a student at the time - I'm still paying back my flipping loan! It's a simple case of the council's @rse not knowing what it's elbow is doing.

Thankyou so so so much for all your words of support - I get one lie in a week and it was ruined by bl**dy baliffs! Arrgh!

Special thanks to taylornj also - that info is very, very useful and will form part of our official complaint (we are now considering taking legal action against the debt collection ageny - I'm calling them on Monday to request all the notes on my account as per data protection act.)

I will keep you posted - a satisfying end to a stressful day, hello bottle of white in the fridge!!!

When dealing with bailiffs. Refuse to speak to them on the phone only deal by letter. They won't like it but it's your right to choose how to/if to communicate with them. Also they are working for the council. The council are therefore responsible for the methods they use. Do not let them in to your house.
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

I'm fairly sure this was the same Bailiff that had been sending letters about non payment of a fine to Transport for London to my Dad's address. Only problem being the lettersd were addressed to someone we have never heard of or has ever lived at my Dads address as he is the original owner. The first few letters were sent back unopened and marked unknown at this address. Then my Dad out of curiosity decided to open the next one that arrived. He then found it was a Bailiffs letter stating they would be paying a visit to secure goods for non payment of the fine. I wrote back to the Bailiffs explaining we did not know the person to whom the letter was addressed, nor had he ever lived at my Dad's address. Then my Dad received another letter regarding them visiting to remove goods but no mention of the letter they would have recieved from me. So I telephoned the Bailiffs office and once again explained the situation and pointed out that as the debt was for non payment of a fine for driving in a bus lane, at the age of 83 and wheel chair bound it would have been very hard for my Dad to have incurred such a fine. The woman at the bailiffs office thanked me for the call and told the the person concerned had been in touch with them and that would be the last my Dad would hear of it. About a month ago I was at my Dad's and one of his Carers was doing her lunchtime visit and told me that a couple of weeks earlier there had been a knock at my Dad's door whilst she was there and it was the Bailiffs. She had to show her ID to prove who she was plus several of my Dad's household bills to prove who he was before he would leave. I have since written to Equita complaining again, but never heard a word from them. If my Dad does receive another letter I shall be taking action as suggested here. If they pay him another visit if no one else is there to answer the door they'll have to take it out on the door bell or knocker, my Dad's hearing isn't too good and he usually has the TV turned right up. My Sister has said that if Dad has anymore contact from them she knows somebody who has the means to find out the owner of the Bailiffs company and will be paying them a visit to knock on their door at a very unsociable hour to see if they like it. Apparently he has done this before and suprisingly enough they don't like it.

Just wondering if there had been any more problems from the bailiffs? I know they sometimes work on sundays just to try to catch people out.

I hope, all is well and that you enjoyed your wine OP :)

My commiserations on this. A similar thing happened when we were students and the council never processed one of our exemption forms (which had been sent in the same envelope!). We never got as far as baliffs but we did get a summons which was very scary. BF and I were both training to be teachers which is stressful enough without incompetent councils trying to scare you - I wonder how many people in this situation end up paying something they don't owe just to get rid of the problem? In the end we had to basically go to the council offices and not leave until they sorted it. The people there were very helpful - pity all the other people I had dealt with on the phone were so unfriendly. Like you say, we did get blamed for it when it was their fault!
