docs and acne?

Options
Ok, ive had enough of my acne now and have booked in to see the doctor on Friday. Do you think she is going to laugh me out of the office?

Im 25 (nearly 26) and constantly have spots on my chin, more worse near TOTM but thats expected. I have tried various things - doesnt help. Use Estee Lauder gentle exfoliating fash wash twice a day, take my make up off with make up remover and put germaline on the spots over night and NOTHING is happening. Ive grown my nails now (yey) but have noticed im accidently scratching at my spots at night (now wear gloves to bed!) and im getting scares :(

Worse still - I have to meet new clients at work and am constantly embarrassed

anyone ever seen doc about them?

  • I had mild acne when I was about 14 and went to the doctors and they gave me something called Zineryt which is a lotion which you put on your skin every morning and every night, it dried my skin out very badly so they also gave me some moisturiser, and this worked great, but then the spots started coming back after about a year so they gave me a cream to use which was brilliant and didnt dry my skin out, can't remember the name though sorry! They should deffinately be able to help you though! I havent had spots since and now Im 19 and dont have to use anything on my skin and havent for approx 2 years :)
  • I had really bad acne for quite a while before I convinced my mum to take me to the doctor (under 16, couldn't go alone supposedly ), and I subsequently got tablets and cream that worked perfectly and fast. "Oh, I didn't know they could do anything about it!" Bah! Had the dry skin side effect but it wasn't too bad, and my next set of tablets didn't cause any side effects.

Hence I feel sorry for anyone who has the false impression that the doctor can't do anything about acne. I don't know if it's due to a generation of parents living in the past, not trusting doctors, or simply dismissing acne as an unpreventable fact of life  </rant>

i went in as a teenager and tried all manner of pills and potions. some helped, some didn't, but i still get some spots (just nothing like as bad as before!). for me, the pill made the biggest difference as all the dietary changes in the world didn't remove the problem.

you shouldn't be laughed at at all.

  • Yeah im 22 and get bad skin, not terrible just little red ones that get sore.

The doctor has given me various creams which do work for a while then stop working, he has now changed my contreceptive pill in a hope that it'll work so fingers crossed

I would go to the docs have it checked out. My OH has bad ache that flares up randomly, he's now 29 and is under hospital supervision on tablets that will clear the acne up for good

I would deffo go see the doctor
  • Spots on the chin are usually an indication of hormones. I defo think your doing the right think going the doctors and getting your hormones checked or get a stronger medical cream for spots if not hormonal.

  • Hi everyone - Thanks for the replies.

I've got an appointment tomorrow morning with the female doctor (Im registered under the mal doctor but i dont think he would understand) so gonna see what she says. She is quiet good so fingers crossed.

I might look into buying mineral foundation but i brought some Clinque foundation not too long ago (def not a cause for spots, if anything they have lessened slightly)

I have also stopped taking the pill just recently, not through spots - was havign terrible moods and nurse recommended it - so will see if that has an effect.

I'm going to ask whether the Levothyroxine tablets I take could be effecting my skin - they are inc reasing my doseage soon so will find out.

Thanks again everyone - I was worried that i was being silly :o

When I was a teenager, I had really bad acne and was given Benzyl Peroxide to use on my face. It made my face even redder than it was in the first place and made my skin peel!

In the end I just left it and my skin cleared up itself. However, I am left with ice pick scars on my face and the apples of my cheeks are really red now and I get spots on my chin a lot. :(

  • Hi, some interesting thoughts. I had bad acne when I was growing up and found that benzoyl peroxide gels dried my face up. I have some friends who have got Zineryt from their doctors and they seem to not have this problem as severely. I found that using a moisturiser in the morning (after applying the gels at night) worked really well to actually reduce the amount of oil that my skin seemed to produce. I don't know if there is any science behind this but it seemed to reduce my acne and spots. I found an article about how to get rid of acne on an online chemists website, seems quite informative and they have the products as well. Haven't compared the prices online yet but they are cheaper than the pharmacy I used to by my spot creams from.

I'd be inclined to say let you face breathe, can you not go without the make up for a few days? or is it a vanity thing.
