Hyper embarrased - Will my credit score be affected

It's like this.

I switched banks a couple of months ago. The new bank was supposed to arrange the switching of all the DDs. I honestly thought that had happened.

Anyway, just after dinner yesterday evening the phone rings and its a chap from the finance company dealing with my car loan. The DD had been returned and I was now late paying the money that was due on the 1st November! I couldn't believe it. I checked my on-line banking while the chap was on the phone and yes, the DD wasn't set up for the new bank.

I paid there and then on my debit card and set up the DD to start again on the 1st Dec.

Two questions spring to mind:

1. Will my credit score (which to this point in time is, in my opinion, perfect) be affected
2. Do I have any comeback with the new bank. I have a letter from the new bank stating that all my DDs have been transferred.

On investigation, there was one other DD that had failed to move over from the old bank to the new.

If it was paid in the same month you should be OK - you really need to check with the lender to confirm how they will report it to the CRAs though.
  • Thanks for the quick reply Andy.

The payment was due on the 1st and paid on the 10th. I make that nine days late. Fingers crossed it should all be okay. I did feel terrible about it though, I never miss a payment on anything.

The car finance is through Santander. I'll take you're advice and give them a call to find out how/what they report.

i switched banks a couple of years ago, and despite the 'switching service' for all dd;s, it was untold hassle and i had to do a load of things myself, they are a complete let down
  • And me, and the new bank bounced a cheque to my parents, very embarassing.

I think the banks conspire to make switching a pain in the !!!!! so as to dissuade people from doing it.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

    hi,

the same problem has happened to me, never missed a payment, and payed it back 5 days later, i would be interseted to know what santander said to you, as this is the company i am dealing with, i am currently applyin for a mortgage and dont want to get refused because of this

    thanks
  • I did call them and although I didn't get a direct answer, I was given the impression that there was nothing to worry. The fact is they could see why it happened, I paid as soon as the issue was brought to my attention and that I set up a new DD there and then.

Not sure what else I could have done really.

I'll find out next month when my credit file is updated.

Don't know abotu Santander - but when it happened to me they put a late payment marker on my credit file *sigh* eventhough I called them ON THE DAY and made a card payment ("it takes x days to clear") because I could see that my original bank had pulled the payment back (!!!!!!!) and the new bank hadn't set it up yet *sigh*. Untold arguing could not dissuade them (although they re-instated my 0% offer and refunded me the "late" charges as I HAD called them and alerted them and offered to pay there and then which "wasn't necessary". I then called back and did an automated payment because I knew they were clueless... I had to tell them I'd request the phone conversation if they didn't pull their socks up and take it further...

I'll be disappointed if that happens to me but, sadly, not surprised. It'll be sad to see that little blemish on my credit file but I guess it's my own fault for not keeping a closer eye on the switching process.
