I would like to buy a new laptop costing up-to £800 inc VAT so I need some professional opinions, please. I have a laptop already but it's at least 4 years old.
I mainly use it for the internet and for the programmes on MS Office, I never play games, I occasionally download music, watch dvds, store my pictures, that's about it I think.
I will hopefully be starting a computer course shortly so would like one that is quite light, at least 15,4 screen, Wi-fi, with security lock etc.
Have seen the above laptop for £679 inc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Catch! I am not the right person to advise you, because I am not knowleadgeable despite using PCs a lot. BUt I am also after a good laptop and I use computing in a similar way to you. Someone who knows a lot told me ACER was one of the good and convenient makes, along with Dell. He also adviced me to get 1 GIGa RAM and 512 MB. HOpe this helps.
On the other hand, I would like to ask you a question, since I have never had a laptop...How do you connect to Internet, if you are not at home? I want mine mainly for when I am abroad and I tend to use the Internet a lot.
Thanks a lot

Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 5024wlmi which is basically the single core version of the one you want (and also a different graphics card). I am very pleased with it and think Acer offers good value for money.
It is my 2nd acer laptop ( i also have an older travelmate 244lm). I have also recommended them to my parents who have one and my in laws who have one. No one has had any problems at all and we all feel we got good value for money.
Might I also draw your attention to this similar machine: http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_314315.html
I think this has a far better graphics card - but only 80gb hard drive. I think a decent graphics card is more important in future proofing a laptop as it canot be changed - but you can add/change the hard drive.
If you get a virgin credit card you can get 13% off purchases at Comet by using the virgin members shop to purchase comet vouchers. Before doing this you might want to try the local Comet and see if they will price match their own website. If they do, pay with vouchers for a further discount.:money:Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0 -

Acer are getting a decent reputation at the minute - I've noticed a few articles praising them (in general) in recent months.
I did notice in our local Tesco's that they were selling Acer laptops as well. Only glanced at them briefly (my Sony laptop does what I need it to do), but I'm sure that it had a 40 or 60 GB hard drive and Centrino processor. Seemed a decent spec for £400-500 if I remember rightly, but I could be wrong on the price...Never attach your ego to your position....0 -
We have an Acer Aspire 1683WLMi laptop. It has an Intel Centrino M735 Processor. We have had it for about a year now. We paid about £900 at the time which was actually excellent value for money. It is fully loaded with features. Very pleased with it except it does get a bit hot so you have to put it on a table instead of on your lap. It went back for service once due to one of the keys coming off and the fan making a funny noise when it started up. Not good really when you think it was only about 8 months old then. But never thought anything of it since as their technical service department is excellent. They have a door to door service free of charge and you get to speak direct to the department working on the laptop. Hope this helps.0
