Can't remove bottom filter from Dyson upright vacuum cleaner

I need to remove and replace the bottom (circular) dust filter from my Dyson vacuum cleaner. In theory you do this by inserting a 2p coin in the lip provided between filter and base, open it up and replace the filter inside.
In practice, the lip provided for the coin seems to be set too close to the upright section at the back of the machine and prevents me from getting a decent purchase with the 2p piece. As a result I cannot open it. I am reluctant to use a screwdriver as the fitting is plastic and it might snap.
Anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
