Think they are 'green enery suppliers' or something along those lines if its the same sign i'm thinking off. They grow willow (in the field behind the sign) and do the pellets for the automatic feeding wood pellet burners. If they do logs let us know how much.

Balcas (Fermanagh i think) ... they supply fuel specifically for these boilers
We use these to buy wood pellets for pellet stove - totally different from a wood burning stove.
  • I'm the OP, I've found a good local supplier (Harvey Fuels, near Donacloney) - I was especially impressed when they arrived late on 23rd December, through the snow, with a few extra bags of logs in case I was running low (I'd scheduled a delivery for early January on the basis of "normal" usage..)

The stove came into its own this winter. After the initial teething troubles it's easy to light and easy to keep lit!

Try local builders - they often have waste wood that they have to pay to dispose of. May have nails in, but shouldn't be a problem (just clean them out with the ashes). Also nice & dry, and many will deliver you a load for free if you have somewhere to store it.

I'd thoroughly recommend checking out local builders, on any new-build developments. They throw the stuff away - we've got a couple of locals who put the stuff to one side and we pick it up regularly - we haven't paid for wood for ages - and have been nice and warm, with water heating topped up too, as our stove has a back boiler :) They like it too, as it saves them space in their skips!

i work in construction and we do throw away tonnes of wood :(

i find a good way of breaking up pallets etc is to use a sledge hammer. it's a lot lot quicker than using a hand saw. you have to be a bit carefull when the wood comes flying up - it might be best to wear goggles.

I've 2 wood burning stoves and would be careful about using unseasoned wood as the fire bricks seem to crumble quite easily and the resin is very difficult to remove.I use local suppliers but often need to keep the wood for around 2 years and will always have some around the stoves drying out.I used timber from a construction site a while back and a nail seemed to almost explode and break the glass with a repair cost of £50.
There was an interesting supplier in NI recently who advertised on gumtree, the wood was said to be seasoned and in containers.
