Supplies for wood burning stove

I'm currently having a multi-fuel stove installed - I'll report back on efficiency etc once it's run for a while!

I've got some wood that's been drying from the summer, but will need a source of suitable size dry wood on a regular basis. I'm based in Lurgan - can any MSE'rs recommend a supplier in Armagh/Down/Antrim either for delivery or that I can pickup bags of wood?

  • you can buy it from suppliers (yellow pages) but i always found them expensivde. long walks in the woods can yield a good supply. often stuff just lying around
  • I live close to Lurgan Park, so I've been gathering fallen wood, but it's too damp this year (thanks to our so-called summer) to use before being well dried. Hence the query!

I'll check yellow pages, but would prefer recommendations.

Can you just take wood, even if it's just lying around? Isn't it the property of the land owner?

Technically it would be theft and Im not sure how much wood you could carry in your arms - lol. Ask the people who are lining your chimney/installing the stove for you - they must know people who supply good wood.

You need to buy seasoned wood which has been chopped up not just laying in a trunk for a couple of years. You need to keep it in a place where air can circulate round it to season it out. Ash is the best wood - some woods will just smoulder and cause you problems with resin build up/chimney fires. If you live in the country with a fair bit of land, try planting some ash trees yourself for future years.

hi there is a person in downpatrick that i get my wood off very reasonable prices and burns well in our woodburner
  • Try local builders - they often have waste wood that they have to pay to dispose of. May have nails in, but shouldn't be a problem (just clean them out with the ashes). Also nice & dry, and many will deliver you a load for free if you have somewhere to store it.

I asked the same question on here about a year ago and one very good suggestion that proved very fruitful was 'Freecycle'. We received everything from cherry tree logs to old pine bed frames :D.

If anything you may find, as we do - that wood provides a bit too much heat, so we save ours for when it is bitterly cold. We use smokeless briquettes, shaped like a small bar of black soap :rotfl:because it burns really efficiently and it's possible to keep the stove just ticking over with it.

Good luck with your stove - there's nothing like a real fire :T.

Balcas (Fermanagh i think) ... they supply fuel specifically for these boilers
  • You'll need more than bags of wood or dead branches if this is your main form of heating - they eat the stuff!
