I am in shock - I bought one parsnip today and it cost me 35p three times the cost of three carrots.
Please dont laugh but thats outrageous.
It was in a supermarket. Bananas are cheaper, although I have paid 30p for one in a corner shop.
What everyday items have you bought and been shocked at the price?

Iceburg lettuce in Morrisons today - 59p. At my local shop - 99p for an inferior quality. We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

What supermarket was it and what was the cost per kg?
Earlier this year I paid 85p for one courgette. That was at £2.08/kg. It went up to £2.79 a kg and at that time it was cheaper for me to buy them at M&S and they lasted longer.0 -
Sainsburys and it was about £2.19 per kgAll my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0

White grapes in adsa last week were over £2 per pound. My bag came to £2-80 at the check out. Yes, I took it back & got a refund! I'm not paying that.
Had been fooled by the loud shouty notice of £0.89 grapes. Turns out they meant BLACK grapes. The price of white was displayed, but sort of hidden.
Theyre used to me making a fuss in Adsa now...0 -
As an ex-greengrocer myself, I have to agree that it is due to the growing season why you paid so much for you parsnip.
Parsnips are winter vegetables, carrots are pretty much available all year round. At this time of year, parsnips will usually be flown in from other countries or grown under special conditions. Hence the high price.
I was always surprised that people expected to pay the same amount for food in and out of season. Strawberries are a prime example, people often expect to pay the same at Christmas as they do in June.
For a rough guide of seasonal produce look here

This is one of many sites (have a google) that will help to you make seasonal choices, much better for your purse and for the environment.0 -
Did anyone see "Tonight with Trevor McDonald" last night - about food miles, buying locally and seasonally - very shocking.0

I agree with oldMacdonald, buy stuff in season, don't expect to buy the same stuff at the same price all year round and you will get on much better.
Knowing how difficult and the time it takes, I find to grow parsnips, I'm always suprised how cheap they are in season. Same as with many things.
Ticklemouse, I did see that program, I been thinking about this for years, but even I was shocked at the distances. My oh blindly buys anything if I'm not with her, it drives me nuts.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -

I watched it TM, something like that makes you think, I am almost supermarket free for fresh stuff like veg, meat, fish and eggs but I will read the labels in the supermarket before I buy anything exotic looking.;)0 -
I once paid over £2 for a red pepper in a greengrocers - and the shock was enough to prompt me into learning more about buying seasonally.Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0
