Number plate smashed by other driver
Someone banged into my daughters car today and smashed the front number plate to pieces in a car park. The man gave her his details, mobile number, address and reg number and said he would pay for it rather than get the insurance involved for that. He said get in touch when she has got it done. Was it ok to do this?
Where is the best place to get one from as she drives all day with her job and is concerned about being without one? can she get one done quickly anywhere? Her boyfriend is sticking it together with strong glue for the time being

a local motor factors should do it, she will need her registration docs and i.d though if she is in england or buying from an english based company. halfords do them but are a bit more expensive than a local place....work permit granted!0

I got mine from Halfords as said you need documents. Also need a drill to make two holes in the plastic to allow for old screws to go back in, cost was around £10 or less0

I dont know why the man didnt give her the money there and then it would have been much less messing around for that. I had found some sites on the internet stating that you don't need any documentation.
Do they do them there and then at Halfords or motor factors or will she have to go back again.
Shes having the car scrapped next month witrh the scrappage deal if it sticks together not too badly could she leave it like that?Thanx

Yes 10 minutes tops is all it takes.
I cant help think if they guy pays up still worst that can happen is that it wont cost much
You need documents to stop clone cars driving around in England but loophole is you can get them made on net in Ireland etc0 -
Open the bonet and have a look down behind the bumber to make sure it hasnt'd pushed the bumper/bumper bar into things like the radiator, air con pipes etc. You'd be surprised what a simple push to a bumper can do! Bumpers are lovely and bendy and pop right back out to where they were!0

Wow never thought of that, I will tell her to check it. She was in a rush and as its never happened to her before she just accepted the mans details and didnt look beyond the broken plate. Hopefully the rest will be ok.
A simple thing like going to get something like this sorted though is a nightmare for her trying to get the time to do it with her working hours even though its only Halfords.
Is it illegal to just stick the broken one seeing as its so close to her having it scrapped with the scrappage deal? would the car still be accepted for scrappage with it like that?Thanx

Yes, however if she were to get a VDRS for the plate and scrap the car within the 14 days she would be ok.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Oh you mean if she gets a vdrs from a police officer because the plate is glued she would have to get it scrapped within 14 days or get it mended?
But if she doesnt get issued with a vdrs she can go ahead and get it scrapped as usual? Its just they have given her December for the new car to be ready, it might be on time it might be laterThanx

Why not get a quote from a garage to do the whole job (ie include fitting).
Send it to the third party and ask him to send a cheque for the cost by return, or pass it to his insurers.
He won't want to lose NCD over this comparitively small sum, so should pay up to close the matter.
Then bank the cheque and scrap the car!0 -
NI and Scotland now require the same docs as England and Wales wef 1 Nov 2008goldspanners wrote: ».............. she will need her registration docs and i.d though if she is in england or buying from an english based company.0
