i have mine on for an hour and half (just gone up from an hour) in the morning and then i try very hard not to put it on again. but with kids all being ill this week so at home and me sat with them it has been very very cold so put it on for an hour late afternoon. that seems to heat the house up ok until oven on for tea and evening i just cover myself in blankets!!!
i try not to put heating on in evening/night as doctor told me that could bring on croup in my youngest!
i dont have temperatures, the boiler is on half and downstairs radiators set to 3 but upstairs are so old they are just on flat out and cant control them. if i could then i may have the heating on more but i dread to think how much they are costing!!!!!!!!! And that is why we have it on timer!0 -
We have a wood burning stove that runs the central heating. We light it after school if 15 degrees or less, but only every other day!0

You could try thermostaic valves upstairs, I know you say they are old, so are mine, but still have them fitted. Also you could try and ballance them by turning the existing valves down, so as to cut down the flow through the radiators, but I would think about the thermostatic valves first.Look after the Pennies and the Pounds will take care of themselves. :beer:0 -

i didnt think of that cos we were told they were so old they just went at full blast all the time no matter how hot they got. will definately look into that, thanks.
But then i may use the heating more so maybe not a good idea!! :P0 -

I would try turning them down first, as it must be cheaper and quicker than buying and fitting thermostatic valves.0 -

Please come back and tell us what you find, as my memory of old radiators is they have a marking on them which tells you if they are off or on and you have to guess the bits in between.
But thermostatic valves have markings which tell you if you have turned them on 1 to 6. .I reckon you could use a felt tipped pen and put your own markings on and old valve and get the same effect.0 -
This is news to me too about old radiators. So I can turn them part way on?
I knew I could turn mine off by turning the valve to the fullest one way and then fullest the other way to turn back on but I hadn't realised that I could have it midway and save some money on fuel.
I've never really understood the thermostatic valves thing and if its something we could do ourselves or would need to get someone in to do. Its the latter that has put me off.JANUARY GROCERY CHALLENGE £23.30/£150

If you think about it, what happens when the thermostatic valve reaches temperature, it closes the valve down, there is a plunger which rides up and down, ie opens and closes the flow of water.Look after the Pennies and the Pounds will take care of themselves. :beer:0
